Pampa Blue Crown Conure lost 6/18/2019 ☹️
Two weeks ago my BCC Pampa flew away. It is totally my fault, I made every mistake, but now I know. The perch in her outdoor cage was in a new awkward position so when I was bringing her in I couldn’t get a hold of her and she flew out. This has happened before and she always just landed on my shoulder. This time she left the yard. I found her in a tree. Mistake, DO NOT try to get your very tame bonded bird from the tree. Plant yourself under the tree with food and water and wait hours or days until they figure out how to climb down to you. Instead I startle Pampa and she flies to a higher tree. I think I am so smart and my bird is so smart because she knows recall. It sort of worked. She came to me when called circling high over my head until she got tired and landed in another tree. Birds used of flying down from 10 or 20 feet DO NOT know how to descend from the top of a very tall tree. Stupidly I repeat this every time she lands somewhere until she flies to a redwood tree bordering a forest. I live in a rural are. She then was harassed by crows and the last time I saw her it was evening and at least 5 crows were chasing her into the forest. It’s a patch of forest, in a gully with a creek surrounded by homes so I spent several hours every morning at sunrise calling for her. I found away to hike into the forest. We brought out another BCC to call for her. I hung fliers, visited vet offices and pet stores posted her online everywhere to know avail. Please if you ever loose a bird instantly go looking and when you find sit down, take a breath and research what to do before doing anything. I would have had her home safe and sound within 24 hours had I done that. I am surprised at how much I miss her. I am devastated.

Very sorry to hear Pampa flew away, thank you for educating our membership.

It is possible to recover a lost bird weeks after the event. I offer this thread to help recount your efforts and potentially open new avenues. http://www.parrotforums.com/lost-found/49129-bring-them-home-tips-locating-lost-bird.html

The specter of chasing crows is ominous, but there is a possibility Pampa survived, flew some distance, and was rescued. Nevertheless, I respect your grief and respect your choice of venue. Yes, they wrap their larger than life personalities around our hearts.

I’m so sorry that Pampa got away - my heart goes out to you.

I am so sorry that Pampa flew away. I hope she finds her way back to you.
Thank you for sharing your tips on what someone should do first, while in the midst of your heartbreak. This may well help many others who find themselves in this position when they remember your post.

I always am very sad to read of a fly-away, because they are 100% preventable. I have experienced it too, many years ago. IMHO parrots outside need a harness of sorts to be safe. Free flying is for an enclosed area like a gym, or riding ring or other enclosed area, or yyou live on a WIDE and OPEN plain with zero trees visable. We have had one of the boards most experienced members, with a macaw trained many years in free flight and recall fly away because she was scared. Dont be that person, be safe with your babies.

Thank you everyone. Pampa was my first. I did lots of research and still was so overwhelmed with her care. We struggled through our relationship and in self preservation I started trick training her until we bonded and without her I am lost.
Again thank you all for your response

It is good to share you story, and go prevent others from having the same thing happen. I'm sorry for your loss, have you tried parrot 911? You can post about her, and maybe help finding her. No matter how long you have parrots you are always learning, and this is a great place to do that.

I am so so sorry. Yeah, over the decades, I've made just about every mistake possible, and I've just lucked out.
Thank you for sharing. A brave thing to do. New parronts and old can always use a reminder. I will be more careful than ever.
I hope you gain some comfort from being here.

So so sorry. This happened to my sun conure a while ago, when I wasn't home. I was driving home from a weekend trip and my trusted roommate accidentally let her out. It was november in northern wi, and pretty cold. Luckily she flew to a tree in the neighbors yard, and it took about 6 people 2 hours to get her back inside. The scariest part was not being home for her when she needed me. Get on Facebook and other websites and get the word out. There is still a chance that someone could see her.
