Hello!

I have a male Eclectus parrot who is 11 months old, Oliver. :)

Recently, I have had to take him to the vet due to an issue with his poop being lime green and runny. The vet looked at a sample of it under the microscope, and said there was nothing wrong with him, there was no detection of bacteria/worms/infection etc. That left me baffled..

They gave me worming tablets because they didn't know what else to give me, I tried that for a week, no improvement.

I took him back to the vet, a different vet gave me a paste to give to Oliver once a day for four weeks, (another test under the microscope was done, and they came to same conclusion as the first time). There has been a very minimal improvement..it's not lime green anymore, but it is a mix of green and brown now, sometimes runny and sometimes solid.

The thing I was instructed to do that if it doesn't improve was to send a sample away to a lab to be tested..but if there has been nothing negative found in it in the first place, I don't want to pay all this money to get no results back..I feel like I've hit a dead end.

The whole time this has happened (since the end of April this year) he has:

- had a great appetite
- his personality hasn't changed
- he is still cuddly and loves being with me

Has anyone else has this issue with their Eclectus parrot, and if so, what have you done to help them? I'm running out of options, so anything will be helpful at this point :)

Thank you! :D

Hello and welcome!

Are these vets avian vets? If not, you really should see an certified avian vet if at all possible. Regular vets often simp aren’t versed in avian health and can make critical errors.

Speaking of critical errors, Did you do blood work? If not, that would be a very important step to take, as blood panels can tell you if there are any concerns with liver or kidney functions.

What is his diet like? While poop is a big indicator of health, it could also simply be an indication of diet!

Hi Chris!

Thank you for your response :)

Yes, the vet I took Oliver to specialises in avian care. His diet consists of Paradise Pellets, with a daily variety of fruits and vegetables (carrot, parsley, capsicum, chilli etc). I was told that once the medication is done and if there has no been improvement, to bring him to back to send a sample off to get tested, there was no mention of the possiblity of blood work being done.

Yeah I’d call the vet back, make an appointment, and insist on a blood test. That can absolutely be an indication of liver disease.

I’d vociferously recommend getting him off the paradise pellets. Those are utter garbage, and you do no favors by feeding those, and can do some harm.
