Working with my flock, each one has their own way of doing things.
Yukon (cockatiel) He is the most advanced in training. If I try something new he will try it right away. I have a scale I ask him to perch on it and right away he not afraid to leave the cage area. He jump on it I got his weight. Stepped up and he was fine.
Tango he was scared of the scale , so I sat with him by the table the scale was on and let him "WORK IT OUT" I held him close to the table so he could look at the scale. I touched the scale with my other hand. I turned it on and just let him continue to look at it . Then I moved him over by the scale to see how he would react and he stepped up and all was good.
Thats what I call "WORKING OUT"
Give them a chance to look at it be around it and realize its ok.
I give my guys as much time as they need to work it out in their head that it will be ok. If you pay attention you can see how they turn their heads to get a better look, or they will just take one step to see what you are up too.
Pegasus is just doesn't like the unknown. And you have to give him plenty of time to work it out. The first time I started to have him stepup and lift him up to the door perch. He just jumped right back to the cage. He didn't wanted to be able to step right off my hand and on to the cage.
So I just started to lift him inch by inch. I would raise him up and put him back so he could perch on the door way. Bit by bit I went higher. But each time I would go back down so he could touch the door way. But once I got him up to the door perch he was able to get on the perch, so I gave him a big treat so he had to sit on the door perch to eat. As he finished it I gave him another. Once he was done. I didn't ask him to stepup on my finger I just closed the door and he was back in the cage. I don't rush at all with Pegasus. He made it to the perch was a big step for him he worked it out. I continued to go to the door perch give him a couple of treats and close the door.
Picture shows the door perch and if you look down you can see the perch at the bottom of the door. I now can ask him to step-up off the door perch and he will let me lower him , to the bottom perch.
When I ask Pegasus to do something he has to touch it with his beak. Look at for a minute. When I put my hand palm up and ask him to step-up on my thumb with my whole hand in front of him he had to grab a hold of my thumb, grab the palm of my hand then stepup on my thumb an take the treat. This ia where my trust in him comes in. He grab he use some pressure, and I l et him he was just checking things out. If he got to hard I would just say easy and remind him I had treat for him. But most of the time once he grab my skin he knew it was me and he started to just step up on my thumb and take the treat.
