I really don't like this

Hi everybody,

I have my little 3 months old green cheek Echo now for 3 weeks. We live in an apartment building, the apartment next to us is empty and the landlord has been doing some maintenance there for the new tenants. We asked him weeks ago that when they started varnishing the floors they should let us know about it because the fumes are just too toxic for a bird, and then we want to get our bird out of our apartment on time. My last bird, my lovebird Pilaf, died after they varnished an apartment in our building, without letting me know on time. Our landlord agreed that he would tell us a day before, so that we could get our bird out of the apartment on time.

Now we suddenly smelled this horrible smell, we looked next door and they were varnishing the floors already. I'm very angry at the landlord for not telling us the day before. But anyway, I just bought Echo to my avian vet, to board him for a few days. Because they will work on the varnishing for at least 2 days. Now I am wondering how that will go, since I've only had him for three weeks. I hope he's not going to think I abandoned him or something. I am planning to visit him at the vet twice a day but that of course not then same as being around me all day long.

We just accomplished so much already and I'm afraid that this is going to set him back, to be away from me for 3 days. What do you all think?

If you are visiting him every day, I would think the absence will be forgotten. I would think the vet will feed him the same as you have been. Echo will be home before you know it.

Yeah I will definitely visit him every day, twice. The people at the vet are really nice and they will probably also spend some extra time with him. They all love parrots.

doesn't sound like an issue to me. He may throw a little tantrum for a day or so when he gets home but that's part of the fun of birds!

Better grumpy birdy than dead birdy. Unfortunately Landlords don't care about your pets, in fact they will be less in favour of them so telling you is at the bottom of their list of things to do

yep, if anything they won't be happy that you have a bird. Nothing personal but pets means mess and mess means money spent when you move out. Over here it's awful, most places will not allow pets. I managed to speak to my landlord and very simply I just said I'm not going to leave the place a mess and just explained to them and they said they were okay as long as there wasn't a mess after I eventually leave and didn't have complaints from the neighbours. In fact they said I could do pretty much whatever as long as I follow those rules

Dogs and cats are officially not allowed but a few people have them anyway and the landlord likes them because I saw him cuddling one of the cats once. He didn't;t have any problems with our bird, and when we talked to him a while ago he was very understanding and promised to let us know one day before if he was going to varnish. But today he couldn't care less it looked. Maybe because we were quite irritated with him. Many people can't deal with taking responsibility for their screw-up.

Have you considered billing him for the boarding, or at least any emergency charges towards the boarding.

He would definitely not pay for that. The boarding is not too expensive actually. About 15 dollars a day. Echo is home now again, because they are going to wait with the second coating of varnish until tomorrow. So tomorrow and also the night, he will be at the vet again. But he was fine actually when we visited him. Everybody loves him already, and they give him extra attention, and we visit him twice a day

I had a landlord years ago who was a total "you know what" and when I moved out, I dumped a bag of kitty litter in the bathtub. He was a private landlord and I was a very good tenant. Thats why I got back at him. He deserved it. Trust me.

Personally, I have NO respect for people who show me no respect. No point in it. If a landlord expects a tenant to be respectful of the property and the rules, they need to be respectful to their tenants.

I'll tell you right now, if my Skittles died as a result of something the landlord did, they'd pay VERY dearly.

I had an issue with my landlord a while back when they were putting in the counters in the apt downstairs. They wouldn't open the windows cause it was winter time and they have a 'no open windows' in the winter policy. I told them that if something happened to Skittles because of the poor ventilation, I'd sue them. They told the workers to open the windows.

Now I live in public housing and I know that makes a big difference. If I were to threaten a private landlord with legal action they'd probably laugh it off. But public housing landlords are held to a MUCH higher standard and tenants have a LOT more rights than you do with a private landlord.

Private landlords, for the most part, are just greedy, heartless 'you know whats'. I get that they get that way often times because of dealing with difficult tenants. But if you treat everyone like crap because some people treat you like crap, then you're just gonna get treated like crap all the time.

There has been a TV program over here where private landlords have to go live in one of their own properties, probably chosen by the TV company. The crux of the matter is that the landlords stopped seeing tenants as people and just saw spreadsheets, profit and loss all the time. When they came back to earth they were decent people underneath and did some nice things for their tenants, one gave some money and fixed all the problems and made the flat nice.
