Sunny the Sun Conure (One Year Old)
Sunny, my five month old Sun Conure, is molting. He's very playful and screams when it's time for him to get out of his cage. I've noticed he's been acting a bit weird lately. He doesn't like his mineral block, but when I woke up today, there were tons of scratched and chips off the mineral block. There was also a rod treat in his cage, it was about 5 inches big and 1 inch wide. Half of it was gone! I don't know if he ate it or not. Sunny has been eating and drinking all day. Should I be worried?

When Sun Conures molt, are they still playful put at the same time, annoyed? Like Sunny loves to play but whenever he sees our nails, he tries to crack them open like seeds. This is the main problem. Can I train him during a molt or should I wait until after the molt? I'm trying to clicker train him, but he's not responding to my continuous efforts to train him. Every time he tries to bite, I have to push his beak off of my nail, I've read that I shouldn't do that but the bite just gets too painful.

EDIT: Sunny is not DNA sexed so we don't know if he's a boy or a girl. We bought him on November 11, 2012.

Bump. Some help would be great :/

since it is probably his first molt i would say wait till after the molt to train him, but till then definitely discourage the nail biting, when this happens put him/her back in her cage and pay attention to another pet, dog/cat. if he/she squawks ignore her/him. and if you don't have another pet then sit in the other room and read a book for a little while(5 mins) and then he/she can come out of her cage. also try getting some uncracked pistachios or other chew toy that she can take this "chewing" instinct out on. hope this helps!
