Hey everyone,

I just bought a female companion for my male Indian Ringneck. The seller says she’s female and was born in 2023, so around 2 years old now.

However, I’ve noticed a small black spot/feather on her neck, and I’m wondering if that’s normal for females or if it could mean she’s actually a young male starting to show a ring.

She’s currently molting, so I’m not sure if it’s just new feathers coming in or maybe a sign of poor nutrition from her previous owner.

Unfortunately, I can’t get DNA sex testing in my country, so I have to rely on visual signs for now.

Has anyone seen this before — a confirmed female with a single black neck feather? Should I just wait until after her next molt to be sure?

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences!

I don't know how the seller can say that your new ringneck is a female when there isn't DNA testing in your country. A male IRN can take up to three years to develop its ring. Prior to the ring emerging, it's almost impossible to tell except for some sex linked color varieties IF you know their parentage. I think you're just going to have to wait and see.
