B&G Macaw
My B&G is still a baby so I don't have any issues yet with screaming, but I like to prepare myself. Those of you with macaws on this site could you please tell it like it is, honestly. What's your experience? Tell me the good, bad and ugly. What are your macaws screaming patterns? Etc.

Fargo doesn't scream at all in the mornings, and throughout the day, he used to have his hyper moments at about 5pm, where he would get excited and say hello, and then do a little scream (i think you have seen the videos :p ) but i have never heard him screaming for a long time, just quick short screams in between words, but i know that is quiet for what he probably could do if he wanted to :p
but! now that my horse is home, i ride at 5pm, and when i get in at 6:30pm, Fargo goes to his sleeping perch straight away, so i havnt heard him scream for a few days now !
And he never screams if he is in his cage :)

I think i got lucky with him ;) but he is only 10 months, so maybe he will get loud when hes older?

I love watching fargos movies. I'll tell you something funny, after feeding Nemo his dinner we play around for a bit. I have a daycare and had Nemo running around in the room. I ended up putting him on a riding horse toy and thought of you and Fargo! Nemo was sooo cute! Wish I had my camera near me.

hahaha awwww thats adorable!! you will have to put him on it again one day and take a picture :)

How old is Nemo now and is he loud?

He's almost 4 months. Just a baby. No, he doesn't make much noise, just playful sounds and he says "hi!" Or "hello!" When we play on the floor he will sometimes do this really cute squealing sound. I was reading posts from another forum and they were telling someone that was thinking of getting a B&G not to because of the screaming so I thought I would ask on this forum. The people here seem to be more honest. I know macaws when they mature can and are loud but I just want to prepare and do things as best as I can while Nemo is a baby to avoid problems in the future.

Aw hes so cute!! :)

I think its all the individual bird, when i went down to the breeders, some of the macaws were squawking and screaming, and Fargo didn't make a single noise! For the first few days after i got him, i thought he was just scared so wasn't going to scream in the mornings, but he still hasn't!

Of course they will scream when they are happy and excited, you will just have to teach Nemo right from the word go that screaming isn't going to get attention :p

Its funny how people say macaws are very loud, so I am still waiting for the day Fargo decides to do a deafening scream!

I have a 9 1/2 yr B&G, up until he turned 6 he screamed periodically, since he entered sexual maturity he can scream continuously thru the day, and yes, so loud that the neighbors can hear even with the doors and windows closed. Enjoy the peace while you can, lol.

As far as screaming goes, Maynard is the UGLY! He engages in multiple screaming sessions each day, and they are LOUD! Why? Simply because it's something he enjoys doing !

C'mon Tab...you know that some Macaws are loud ;) ... you've heard Maynard

Willie is usually quiet during the day, but few occasional screaming. If my partner is on the phone around him, he screams...lol....IF the back door is open, he screams....If he wants attention or treats, he screams. Over all, he's not bad....It's not the screaming that gets me, it's his hormones....I can not handle him during hormone period....

Niko is only 3, and yes, he's had moments when he let's "lose". It always happens when he's on his Java Tree, in the morning, and REALLY excited about something that is going on outside. :) It's loud, but luckily it never lasts long.

Since Nemo is just a baby I want to try to get him off on the right foot so I have to ask; I work from home ( i do daycare). Nemo(B&G) and Rocky (CAG) are in our "discovery" room. The room is set up so we can see and hear the birds but can't physically touch them without going into their room. Sometimes it can get, well loud. Not from the birds but the kids ( 12 of them!). Right now everything is sunshine and roses, the kids LOVE the birds, the birds LOVE the kids. My parents think its wonderful. It's a lot of fun! After work I bring the birds in my house one at a time and spend some one on one time. In your opinion am I setting my birds up to being screamers? I don't mean the occasional outburst of macaw yells that I do expect but the screams that go on all day from some. I love my set up I have to say. My birds have plenty of safe space, they are only in heir cages at night and I get to be with them all day. But if this environment is going to cause stress on them I will move them to another area in my home.

I don't know if there is any truth to this or not, but a long time Macaw breeder once told me that a Macaw is as loud as its home.

My macaws are 9, 19, and 30 years old. Screaming usually happens between 7:30PM and 9:00PM. One will start and the others will chime in. If they hear you talking on the phone in the livingroom they may start because they hear and want to see you. If the doorbell rings or they perceive that someone is walking by the front of the house (mailman) they give the 'warning alarm bell' scream. I don't need an alarm system. Kayko is my most timid of the three, yet he can scream worse that the other two put together! When they insist on screaming at night I distract them by giving them something to chew on, like a chicken leg bone or beef rib that may take an hour to take apart. I would think a solitary macaw would be worse about screaming. They seem to be better if interacting with each other.

My two are just beginning to go into the terrible twos mode of their lives. I can tell this by their subtle change in behavior & I know soon it won't be so subtle. When I first brought them home they screamed very little throughout the day. Lately they are taking pleasure in having a contest with each other on screaming, but it doesn't last long & is not ear shattering, yet.

They are in an 5X8 aviary split in half for each one, so when they decide to compete they are face to face going at it. Sometimes they mock fight at each other during the screaming. It usually lasts just a few mins. When I first get home from work in the morning as I open the door is when Angel screams the loudest. I start telling him 'Hello' to get his mind off the scream & back on his fine talking ability. Since he is the special needs one, he seems to listen more to my talking to him & he says more words plainly than Roscoe who is full of himself.

If I am not in the same room with them & I cough or just say anything they will give the call scream to let me know they are wanting me back in their sight. I do expect as they mature they will become much more vocal.
It's going to be fun & probably a little nerve wracking at times. I am so thankful I don't hear as well as I used to. That sounds crazy, but us parrot folks know what I mean by it.

I have 2 macaws and they both scream one after the other but it certainly not every day they are 9 years and 4 years

At 15, Remington is like a toddler only screaming when I'm on the phone! And its only the house phone not my cell, otherwise he is pretty quiet

Mine only scream when they want something and it's usually very easy to figure out what it is. Loud?? Yes, they can get very loud, especially when I'm cooking anything in the kitchen, they seem to think they're entitled to whatever it is. :54: Breakfast is the worst I think cause they KNOW they always get some when I'm done.

Also. there is no such thing as letting just one GW out, you're gonna get an earful for not letting them both out.

Nice. So so far not too many on this forum have macaws that scream continuously for hours a day.
