Introducing Yuri! Ona’s New Sister!

Well it’s not great news. They did X-Ray her and the feet look fine BUT there is a little spec in her stomach of a foreign body she has ingested. They are thinking it could be something metallic and could be zinc toxicity, which can cause nerve issues and lameness. They drew blood to send off for tests to see if that’s it. It’s possible it’s not related and just a soft tissue injury but the zinc is highly likely. Also sent of for ABV test, which I had planned to do next week anyway.

I am very fortunate to have a stellar Exoctic vet nearby and my bird sitter was the vet tech today. Now we just have to wait for results….. my least favorite thing.

She did take her first bath when we got home. She must have needed to wash the vet off. And you can see her little curled foot here too :(

She is acting well and eating lots still. Doesn’t act like she’s in pain or anything.

But I just went through all this zinc stuff with Ona not that long ago! Ugh! They said it’s likely whatever she ate she did so at the pet store.
I'm sorry. :( I hope she'll be okay!

Oh @onamom, I'm so sorry to hear this news! Certainly she could've picked something up at the pet store, even better luck for Yuri that she came home with you because another owner may not have been so attentive to have picked it up so soon and got her to the vet so quickly! Big hugs and love coming your way!! 🤗💖🤗💖🤗

Poor little sweetie! How do they treat it?

If the results come back that’s what it is then chelation therapy. It’s injections. Plus possibly getting her to pass the object with Metamucil and hospitalization

Luckily because of my connection with my bird sitter she is willing to do the injections at home for me. She did that for Ona last year. But if she does need to pass the object she told me that would have to be done at the clinic.

Poor baby! I wonder now if Cora may have a toxicity problem, too because that's what her foot is doing. I didn't know metal poisoning could cause lameness. Thanks for informing me. Do metal toxicities go away in time? How are they going to help Yuri if it is?

No, it does require chelation treatment to get it out. The toxins can get in the blood stream. Ona was just treated for this somewhat recently.

OH MY@ @ having to pass the object at the vet! Hopefully, you folks won't have to wait long! And yaaaay@ Injections are able to be done when she's at home!

Just poking out to say hello

Oh that girlie of yours is just so sweet! How is she going, @onamom? Are you still waiting for those test results? I HATE waiting for test results!!

Actually I did get the lead and zinc results back yesterday and they were NEGATIVE. Still waiting on ABV which I am hoping will be back very soon. I also HATE waiting on test results and I have a lot of PTSD with it from my own health.

I am seeing some improvement in the foot - she has been stretching out her two front toes more and has gripped normally on her own a couple of times. Still possible this is a soft tissue injury, or the vet says it's possible it could be another type of metal or plastic toxicity as well. She is eating lots and happy.

My rescued escapee budgie Cora went lame with a foot issue 8 hours after we got her home. She had likely strained sometiming falling behind my dresser when out for the first time. A vet exam showed no fracture but showed an abdominal mass that MAY have been pressing on the nerves and vesselsbin the leg but after about 5 days in a safe quiet plastic bin with very low perches she has completely (apparently) recovered and is perching normally. Perhaps Yuri hurt herself a little and is going to be just fine in short time, too.

USPS lost Yuri’s sample in the mail so I have to take her back Monday for a redraw for the ABV test D:

She’s doing great though! Moved her to a stainless steel cage today because she is such a bar chewer!

How's her foot?

There has been some slow improvement. She does use and extend the front two toes now. She has gripped my finger normally a few times on her own. But she is mostly keeping the back toes facing forward still.
