I just bought a Bunn coffee maker and was wondering if it's safe. It has a porcelain coated warming plate and I have never heard anything good or bad about heated porcelain and parrots!

As far as i know, the Bunn coffee maker is safe. I was looking for "proof" of it somewhere, but didn't find it so far.

I think it depends on where you keep your bird. For instance, I cook with all the pots and pans we are told not to cook with. My bird is in the basement and is no where close when I cook. I also burn candles and incense, but away from the bird and never when I have him out with me. Some people ask me "Why risk it?", but I don't see it as a risk because I never had an issue, and I am smart enough to know that cooking near your bird is dumb, and having your bird in an area of the home that can be potentially dangerous is dumb.

I think it's just common sense, if you think something might harm your bird than keep your bird away. I personally wouldn't have my bird anywhere NEAR the kitchen as there is too many things in it that can hurt the bird. So why be near it at all?

As long as the bird does not 'physically' touch the hot plate - it is safe.

Cooking surfaces that pose a threat aside from being touched (such as non-stick teflon) produce air toxins that are harmful and even deadly to birds when used at high temps.

A coffeemaker's hot plate does not produce enough heat to emit those odors in the first place. Your primary concern should be not letting the bird get too close that they scold themselves (including touching or pecking the colander) as well as the wires. Careful of those! Birds love to chew on them.

I contacted Bunn just to be safe and they said none of the components are made with a nonstick coating and the warming plate is porcelain coated steel.
