Pineapple/cinnamon green cheek conure
Hello everybody,

In two weeks I will have a new green cheek conure cinnamon/pineapple mix, and I want to make a nice play stand for him. Now I am wondering if teak wood is safe for parrots. Because I have a stand for a plant that I've already had for years, and I'm thinking to build a play stand on top of that. I have been searching online but I can't find it anywhere if teak is safe though. Does anybody know?

I have no idea about that. Many years ago I bought a stand for a plant, and I just found out that it is teak. I wanted to build a play stand on top of that for my new bird but if it's toxic I can't.

Not a very eco friendly choice of wood IMO. Is this not one of the trees/woods that has suffered terribly for the furniture trade?

Also, overly expensive for the application! Your Parrot will be more interested in making tiny pieces! Target 'finish grade' white pine! Lumber yards and Big Box Stores commonly have an end-cut barrel with anything from free to very little cost. Great place to get 'finish grade' white pine!

Teak wood (teak oil) resists the effects of water, both fresh and salt. Very common along the shoreline for outside furniture and finish work on Boats.

FYI: Build above it with 'Zero' access if you want!

That's going to be an excessively expensive chew toy! I made Kiwi's first play stand from wood (manzanita I got free in my parents backyard) and it lasted all of a year or 2 before it was chewed beyond being safe to use.

I'd use cheap wood if I were you and nothing too 'exotic' or rare. It WILL be destroyed in a relatively short period of time.

I'm not going to use it as a chew toy. I have a stand, that was initially for a plant, that stand is teak wood, on top of that I want to build the play stand for my new bird.

You may not intend for it to be chewed but your bird will still more than likely chew on it, and many other things for that matter.

If your guy can chew on it, then it is bad! I have not been able to find anything that directly lists it as a risk for parrots, several sources do list it as a risk for humans!
