Is this comfy?

I have bought a small cane basket to sleep in.
He wont use it.
I stuffed it with Shredded newspaper.
He tore up the paper that poked out of it, but then ignored it.
How can I make it budgie friendly?
What does he like.
At the moment, when ever I sneek a peek under the covers, he is sleeping like this

This cant be comfy?

My budgie slept like that as a baby, or with one foot on swing wire and the other on the cage wire. She seemed to grow out of it. Now she sleeps as close as she can to the cockatiel without getting her head bitten off (not literally)

Will a male budgie nest?
Or live in the one I got for him?

Hi RedBalloon!

The first thing, and it's tough..., ready - STOP SNEAKING PEEKS!!

Birds are very sensitive to moment so your approach (even though you're quiet) is enough for them to go into alert mode.

Where your darling was comfortably sleeping could be very different from where they are comfortable due to constant peekings. It's so tough not to check in - especially when they are quiet. Heck, once they mature you freak because it's too quiet...

Keupi, my Senegal, is pretty much set on sleeping on his 'sleepies perch.' Most budgies I've owned (been mine and including the adopted ones from Mom's flock) always seemed to gravitate towards sleeping on the swing. On the swing, though, was any area on the swing not just the perch part of the swing. In the young days it was more about highest area.

Long post short, looking at the pictures, your budgie is doing exactly what any budgie would do - seek the highest area. That's an instinct of the wild. Yes it looks funny, but it's normal. Stop peeking and in a few weeks, your fid will probably be off the bar of the swing and on the perch of the swing.

It's probably not the most comfortable, but it is very natural. This may be the time to control your own instinct to provide comfort while your fid gets 'comfy.'

Did I mention, stop peeking? He looks like he's doing just fine!

I don't know Red, maybe you should get him a "Happy Hut" KIDDING!!!

I went to buy him one and the lady told me I need a cane basket if I wanted him to use it.
So I got one, and he wont use it.

Red - other than where he's choosing to sleep (that you know), is there any other signs that he's not adjusting well?

But consider this, based on the pictures the cane basket is not in the highest part of the house. There is no other place for his swing (for him to, you know, swing) other than there. Most birds will seek the highest area for sleep as this is prey instinct.

DON'T remove either, but you need to realize it's not about what you provide to make them comfortable - it's about them being comfortable and then putting to use what we provide.

You could provide the softest, most expensive piece of cashmere for snuggle up and sleep and at the same time provide the toughest piece of wood to chew... and maybe a fid will go 'spa' but chances are - they chew the cashmere and snuggle up and sleep next to the wood.

I don't think he is mal-adjusted at all.
I just cant think of a more uncomfy way to sleep.
I will try and put the cane basket as high in the cage as I can.He does love his swing so I will try not to compromise it when re-placing the basket.

He has now made a new doorway in the top of his cane house. (chewed it in)
I haven't seen him go into it yet though.

Er. I used those cane baskets for my zebra finches to nest in/eggs, never had a budgie venture into one even though they were in the same aviary. I would think they'd be way too small for a budgie's tail anyway.
No bird is going to act exactly like another one, your budgie may never use the basket or he may suddenly decide he can't live without it. I think those baskets are inexpensive but it sounds like the store was just trying to make a sale, to me.

Its being de constructed a piece at a time.
I think he is secretly making a glider in the attic with the wood from the hut.

Lol.. well at least he's having fun with it!!

He is in!

He seems to be happy with the amount of deconstruction to be able to move in.
