Juliette is home! (Lineolated Parakeet)

Today Juliette imitated a weather vane for at least two hours. She says there is an East wind. Perhaps she's hoping for a handsome rooster...

I generally wear contacts, but Button loves hanging from my glasses when I wear them! Silly birds.

I took Juliette in for a well bird exam yesterday and it turns out that she has a sinus infection :( . She has been as cheerful as normal, so hopefully we caught it early. She's sequestered to the bedroom with a humidifier, space heater, and ten days of antibiotics. She's actually been pretty good about swallowing her medicine, as long as you can catch her. She's way too smart to come quietly when she sees the dinner napkin heading her way. I feel so bad that I didn't know my beautiful girlie was sick. She was shaking her head, and I thought it was a feather bothering her. She sneezed, and I thought it was related to preening.
She did such a good job at the vet and didn't even try to bite when she was being examined. Everybody loves her polka dots. We'll be going back for another gram stain in two weeks to make sure everything is cleared up.

Glad you caught it early. Good to hear her behavior is normal.

Oh poor girlie! Hope the antibiotics clear it up quick, and good for you for catching it early!

Juliette finished her ten day course of antibiotics. Each day she got a little more clever about avoiding The Birdrito. By the last day all I had to do was move my hand toward the dinner napkin and she was up on the top of the curtain rod. But once I managed to catch her she was actually very good about taking her medicine. Hopefully she won't need another course. We'll find out at her follow up appointment Thursday. The hardest part is that she's been stuck in the bedroom where I can keep it extra warm and humidified.

Wishing you all the best, Juliette, hopefully no more Birdrito for you! 🤞 🤞 🤞

Yep.... and when they realize what yer gonna do, they become little ninjas.

I'm amazed at the smarts. She just. Knows. At any other time she's apt to actually run under my hand for tunnel scritches. If she gets a whiff of fruit flavored pink goo she gets out her nun-chucks.

Juliette had her follow up appointment today. Seven days of nose drops and then hopefully we're all done. We haven't tried the nose drops yet. Somehow we're going to manage this twice a day. The first time shouldn't be too bad, because she doesn't know yet to avoid it. She has every right to be mad at me, as she also got her nails trimmed at the same time, and one of them was clipped too short, causing it to bleed. Poor girlie had a rough morning, but preening and shoulder snuggles seem to be making up for it.

Awwwwwwww the poor little love, she hasn't had a fun day! I've never had to administer nose drops so please keep us updated as to how she goes with those. And give her LOTS of extra lovin' from me too please - snuggles ALWAYS make everything better 💖

She's on Gentamicin. It seems like a serious drug for a little birdie who is nearly better, but I am no expert. I just shouldn't have looked it up on Google. I will give her lots of extra scritches from you. Right now she's grinding her beak in my ear, so all is well.

It is a pretty hard core antibiotic normally given IV but if the vet says it's appropriate I would try not to second guess it. It can be toxic in high doses but it's poorly absorbed by the digestive tract so I doubt her blood levels got too high. Are the nose drops Gentamicin?

Yes it's technically an eye drop, but for her it's a nose drop. Tonight she got one nostril, and then she jerked with the second, and promptly disappeared into the dinner napkin and wiped her face, so I don't know how much, if any, went in, but I don't want to risk overdosing her with such a serious drug.

I wouldn't redose the nostril that got some of it but I'd try to dose the other. Gentamicin drops are considered topical which is much safer than giving it iv or even oral because it's not really absorbed into the bloodstream. The vet clearly wants the infection adequately treated or they wouldn't have prescribed such a "strong" antibiotic.
