Juliette is home! (Lineolated Parakeet)

She’s so incredibly cute

Juliette just gave me the worst scare. She flew somewhere (later I discovered out of her bird room) and I heard a thud. I spent ten frantic minutes tearing the house apart trying to find her. She never disappears without giving me a chirp so that I can rescue her if she's stuck. Ten minutes of dead silence. I thought she had run into something and broken her neck. Finally I heard a chirp and found her on top of a secretary with a poisonous philodendron. I don't think she ate it. I didn't see any bite marks. She's acting normal. Her poops are normal. I can't afford to just run her to the vet because she "might" have eaten something.

How scary! Is there any way to block her from going into that space? Maybe you ought to get rid of that plant or put it in a room she can't access. I have some cactus plants that I keep on wide window sills but I keep the drapes closed behind them to keep the budgies away from them. Joey's been scaring me, too, lately. I brought her down to the great room/kitchen area where we hang out last week and when we turned away she disappeared for 30 minutes and John was having a meltdown trying to find her. We found her on the floor walking out from under the fridge. She has been moved into our new master bedroom suite with a huge bathroom with a 7' wide 7' high glass shower enclosure at one end. The bathroom doesn't have a door on it yet but it doesn't open straight into the bedroom- it's around a corner- and Joey has been taking sides trips into the bathroom when she does her zoomies around the big bedroom. I'm scared she's going to slam into the glass so I've had to drape a towel over the top edge of the glass to define the limits for her and always keep the toilet lid closed. She seems to get it because she zooms in, turns around, and zooms out back into the bedroom but I've got to get the door put on or put a curtain over the entrance temporarily to keep her out. I don't think I will ever be able to trust Joey out of her cage unsupervised so her private cage is 48"x18"x32".

I know I take risks giving most of my budgies freedom to fly all day without supervision. The free flyers have never gotten into any big trouble, but I can't bear the thought of them sitting in cages all day long. For the past few years they've only been caged at night and I think they'd go crazy if I locked them up.

I wish I could get rid of the plant, but it isn't my plant or my house. She's never allowed out of the bird room outside her cage unless I'm right with her. There are just too many hazards, including open toilets and a gas stove. Unfortunately she flew out when the door was opened. We had to move here because the apartment was full of mold. I gave her some activated charcoal sprinkled on her favorite seeds just to be safe.

Very scary. A suggestion. I need to block Nameliss from front of house and dangerous plants. I put a shower curtain rod and two curtains in the hallway. No damage to walls unless you use screw in wall supports. Get rod bigger than curtain seam. Curtain will be snug do top won't slide easily. Easy to open them and pass through. Cheap. Curtain can be color coordinated for decor. Unfortunately for me Nameliss prefers to walk and climb.

Do you put tension rods at the top and bottom? I'm a huge fan of using tension rods and grommet top drapes to keep my budgies where they belong. Even in doorways with conventional doors, they're faster, easier and safer to open and close because they can't get slammed. I also have a tension rod with a clear plastic shower curtain imprinted with a realistic tree spanning a six foot opening from my main living area into the fully enclosed insulated front porch area. There are floor to ceiling 3 foot wide glass panels on either side so I can keep an eye on the "Porch Budgies" while sitting in the main room. I have 8 budgies out there in a huge divided cage (boys on the left, girls on the right) plus three more boys (Tiki, Baja and Corona) who fly free out there all day. My budgies are accomplished flyers but fortunately they aren't "walkers" so they haven't figured out to just push their way through at the bottom so I only need a rod at the top.

Tension rods are great but can wear out. I do use tension rods unless I want to make it permanent. I only use at top. Place high as I can or feel like. Since blocking hallway or doorway only on top.

I just added a master suite addition onto my tiny house and my husband did custom woodwork on the ceiling, doorways, and windows. If I screwed curtain rod hardware into his beautiful woodwork he would flip out so I'll use tension rods . I've had a long one up going into the porch for two years and it's holding well.

Use a bit of that non skid sheet on rods. It'll help secure against gravity and protect wall. I protected paint.

I feel like I have completely failed as a bird mama. Juliette freaked out last night and made a bee line for a window. She's never been anywhere near that room, but she managed to fly through three rooms at the speed of sound and hit it very hard and was very shook up. Her poor beak, her poor beautiful beak, is black and blue. Of course the vet wasn't open, it being Saturday night. She is acting normal today, cuddles this morning, eating just fine, chewing on her toys. I want to take her to the vet tomorrow, but I don't know if there's anything they can do for a bruised beak. The other person in the household doesn't seem to think it's necessary to take her in. But the other person thinks all veterinary care is ridiculous. I really, really can't afford a vet bill. But if there's something they can do, I would figure out a way. I am more concerned about head trauma than the actual bruise, but she's acting normal so far.
