Juliette is home! (Lineolated Parakeet)

Juliette is on a very specific feeding regimen because she is just weaned. Thankfully she can serve herself seconds and thirds and elevensies. She also gets training treats and hung veggies. We started target training today.

Yes with a clicker and millet.
She's making adorable noises under her cover again. The last few hours before her official wake up time (nine AM) are going to be the hardest because she is just so darned cute under there.

Camera shyness is a course many parrots excell at. How do you get her to stay 'quiet' so late in the morning? Nameliss is a dawn to dusk birdie. We compromise in that lights on is 0700, off 1945. When sunrise is earlier then her light, she plays with toys and makes a variety of noises. It was different before my daughter started working from home. Then it was 0500 to 1800 lighting. It took months to get her to accept later. The dogs want out at dawn too!

Just when I think she can't get any cuter, I let her out for some exercise in a bird safe bedroom...

37"X18"X18". Linnies need a longer cage than tall, so I got a double breeder cage and removed the divider. The dowel rod (which I wouldn't normally use) is there to cover the track for the divider. I cut one of the dowels it came with to fit. I wouldn't recommend this particular cage though because there were several rough spots in the coating that I had to sand down due to concern for her sweet little feets. Thankfully they were in places she doesn't need to access, like under the newspaper, on the divider grate, and in the right hand door, which will remain closed. I had already returned another cage which was unusable due to the bars being welded unevenly. This one, at least, isn't going to be a strangulation risk. If she starts ripping up the newspaper I'll have to vet tape the bottom grate to make sure she doesn't get near the sanded spots. So far she's been happy to stick with her toys.

She's definitely getting more comfortable and is not lacking skills in self assertion! This morning I sneaked off to the grocery store to be back before her wake up time of 9:00. Well...

Human: "I'm so clever I got back here at 8:20 so I have plenty of time before birdie wake up time and I can sneak around and put away the groceries and make breakfast!"
Birdie: "Squawk chirp rattle rattle squeak squawk CHIRP!"
Human: "What are you doing under there??"
Birdie: "STARVING chirpppppppp rattle. Penetrating stare around cover."
Human: "You aren't supposed to be awake yet!!"
Birdie: "Squawk. Faint. Hunger. Must. Food. Now. Eat. "
Human: "I must compensate for my inadequacy by immediately preparing a massive breakfast containing copious amounts of every fresh goodie I bought this morning."

My birds could never sleep past sunrise, which makes for very early mornings for me in June and July. Birds in the wild wake with the sun and start eating right away. They don't say "the early bird gets the worm" for no reason!

Yes she always has food. She just hadn't gotten her morning chop yet and she has a flair for the dramatic. Adorable but insistent.
