Just how temperamental are they?

How temperamental is your Amazon? I'm trying to research Amazons, especially the blue fronted, and African Grey Timnehs to decide which bird my family would be best for. They both seem like amazing birds and I'm having a hard time deciding.
Everything I have read about Amazons has mentioned them being very temperamental.

with my experience with amazons, it really depends on the species. I would refrain from the hot amazons. Greys have a tendency to be nervous birds which can also be temperamental. Remember, all birds are different! I wouldn't recommend an amazon or an african grey as a family pet, but one of the least temperamental amazons is the Lilac-Crowned amazon. Here is a great link to pet amazons.''

Amazon Parrots from South America

Hope I helped!

I own both and I would really look at the Amazon. Grays are great if a bit needier.

I have a 27 y/o yellow nape amazon who is a doll. Always wants to be with me so I am thinking every bird is different. My suggestion is to find an older bird so you do not go through the hormonal stage.

IMO amazons make great family pets, just need a good owner/leader. A well socialized bird is the key, not one that's been a locked away in a cage somewhere. IMO personality is more important than species. I have some very sweet nape hens.

I am extremely blessed to have 2 Amazons, and they both fall under the "hot" category. Both of them are THE sweetest birds in the world.

My 14-year old YN hen "Hunter" is an all around cuddle bunny with the entire family. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. :)

Then there's Sam, my DYH MALE. He is SO playful, SO talkative and SUCH a clown. Can he be temperamental? Sure....but so can my Macaws ;)

Amazons need TONS of socialization, meaning take them out, take them with you, have other people hold them or pick them up. :)

African Greys also could be "moody" sometimes. There are some days when my CAG is in a battle mood, she'll attack everything on her way including me.

The blue fronted amazon that I am considering is 2 years old and currently really sweet and prefers women. It is supposed to be a male, but the rescue that he's at is going to have him sexed at the end of the month to make sure.
We have a large family, so I'm looking for a bird that will be able to handle the chaos. However, the bird would be mine. We have linnies and a green cheek conure that the kids handle.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it will all work out. :)

IME Amazons handle chaotic pretty well. Both of mine start singing and chattering away when it gets hectic in here. It never leaves any negative side effects on them. I even make it a point and let them out, so they can better see what's going on. They LOVE being involved. :)

Yellow shouldered Amazons are smaller, quieter and concidered to be much sweeter than most other Amazons. They are not as vocal either. But I agree with the others who owned by Zons, each bird is it's own charachter.
I think it's very important to consider if you are adopting or buying a baby bird as well. You never know for sure how the bird was socialized with people (if at all) when you are adopting. So, the most important thing would be to find out about her/his past owners, not the species of the bird if you are planning to adopt.
Both birds are very nice birds. Good luck!

If your looking for a parrot that can best handle a houseful(choas) then an amazon is a great bird. The thrive on being at the center of what ever is going on. The more people / activities the better. But you may not always be the "Favorite One". The better socialized the more friends a zon can have and still have their favorite person. Socialize, socialize, socialize.

I have a male 35 year old DYH Amazon. He handles everything well and chaos is not a problem. He always wants to be part of the action and he is a complete show off. He is also a love bug. That being said he would be miserable if not handled and included in just about everything.

I have a Yellow Nape, about 7 yrs old I have had for 10 months. He is EXTREMELY moody around me but loves hubby. Some days he is my best friend, other days he is my worst enemy. And all for no reason. LOL, whatever slight he feels I know he blames me. But that's OK, I expected that when I got him and he hasn't disappointed. He too does not like to be left in a room alone and rarely is. Very cage territorial bird. A supreme talker and associates words with action. Amazing bird, wish he had chosen me for his mate but you just never know who they will like and when they do choose you have to honor their choice.
From others I have know who have these birds they have remained true to their choice of person for a very long time unless the situation radically changes, i.e. divorce, death, etc.

I don't have much experience with Amazons but I was in the same boat as you looking at the same birds. In the end I got a Yellow Shouldered Amazon. I did my research and found that they are very sweat, intelligent and have the ability to be really good talkers. Another plus is their size, they are about 3/4 size of a blue front. I also feel that their colors are a little more vivid than the other Amazons but it might be the one I have. I have no regrets with my decision and feel I have something really special.

Jackie did very well dealing with my son (1.5yrs) and they would often have babbling conversations lol Jackie also did well at steering clear of him though because he's in the "I need to hammer anything and everything" stage. 😱 he loved being in the middle of it all though, but he also had mood swings that changed so fast I swear it gave me whiplash lol

The other type of Amazon I was considering was the Mexican red headed Amazon. They are supposed to be a little more easy going than the other types. White fronted Amazons are really nice too and I think they are the smallest.

I think the Panama has THE best reputation out there for being a sweet, fairly even tempered and lovable Amazon. :)

Don't over look the Red Lored Amazon. Mine is sweet and very bright colored!

I have a Lilac Crowned Amazon, and he is AWESOME!!! I don't have much experience with other breeds of Amazon, but if my Bacci's demeanor, and intelligence is common to the breed, you can't go wrong. Such a good bird, and wonderful companion!

I have to second the Panama Amazon. I've had Harley for 4 weeks now, and he's such a sweetheart! At first he was really traumatized, but understandably so, as he'd been uprooted and flown across the country to live with us. Slowly but surely he's blossomed into a sweet, comical and trustworthy family member. At first he was very cautious with everyone, but now he'll step up for everyone! We love, love, love him!
