HI Fellow Parrot Lovers! Baby Green Wing Macaw, Loving Departed Yellow-naped Amazon "Poe"
Hello Everyone !

My name is Joe, and we just lost our family Amazon last month, It was the first death I could not shield my children from.

The bird was passed to me from my father, his name was "Poe", We all Loved him VERY Much, The really strange thing is he died on Edgar Allen Poe's death day (October 7th)

He seemed fine, nothing "new" in his life, except my daughter going to the hospital, for 17 days she was gone (it was a VERY scary time for our family) She was having unexplained seizures, it turns out it was from a slight fall that caused something to go wrong, maybe brain swelling, the doctors could not figure it out

Anyway, The bird died on the day my daughter got out of the hospital.... talk about sad

My 17 year old son was also very close to the bird and it really got to him bad

I was Very Very close to the bird also, from the time we got up in the morning, to the time we all went to bed the bird was always with one of us

I've been thinking I would like to give my children something to raise and have with their children, My daughter is 21, my son is 17 and my youngest is 15, I am a single parent for the last eight years and we are a very close family.

Anyway, Now that you know a little about us, I was thinking about a Mealy BUT then I heard a few of them talking on YouTube and their voices sounded kinda "rough" is that just the way they talk?

Thanks !

Joe

It became necessary to keep another cup at my computer for Poe, because whenever he would see me drink he would start trying to get into my cup too (I am sad now that I never videoed it) We all drink Cranberry juice (80% water and about 20% Cranberry, so it is very light) I miss him

Poe and our hairless cat "Ra", the bird was not scared of the cat, and the Sphynx cat is not a "typical" cat, mine has no real mousing instinct, Our Parrotlet "snuggles" with the cat all the time

aw very sad for you he looked adorable

So sorry to hear about your beloved feather baby!!!! Deepest condolence to you and your family!

Oooooh, such a beautiful bird he was. He doesn't look old at all in all these pictures. Do you know how old he was?
So sorry you lost a family bird. They live for so long.....I am sure he was a big part of the family. It's so sad.
Amazons try to talk just like a person he/she likes a lot. I am not sure about Mealy, but DYHA, YNA and BFA are considered the best singers and talkers, I think.

It sounds like you have a so wonderful family, I'm glad your daughter is out of the hospital.

That's so sad you lost Poe, I can't imagine how I would cope if I lost one of my fids(feathered kids). Did you have a post mortem done? What was Poe's diet? Parrots should eat a diet of high quality pellets(Harrison's and totally organic pellets are both excellent), as well as healthy bird safe fresh and prepared foods. A seed diet is obsolete, and can literally cut a birds life in half.

I don't know too much about panama amazons, except that they are generally calmer compared to the hot three(blue front/yellow naped/double yellow head). Please remember that not all parrots will talk, even if the species is well known for doing so. Research different species and decide which seems the best all around for you and your kids.

Enjoy the forum :) lots of great parronts here willing to answer any question you at have.

I'm sorry for your loss. I highly recommend you get a necropscy done on Poe if possible so you can know cause of death.

Welcome Joe - to parrotforums. I'm very sorry you all lost your Amazon - a death of a pet is always sad. I don't believe in shielding children from death because it is a part of life and we all have to learn to deal with it. I well remember going to my Grandmother's funeral when I was 5, and I think it helped me a lot to deal with death later in life. Anyways - maybe you will decide to get another pet bird at some point. We certainly would welcome your expertise.

I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your beautiful baby. I recently lost my Amazon, and although I did not have him nearly as long as you had Poe, I completely understand how utterly heartbreaking it is. He was so beautiful, I enjoyed looking at your photos of him.

Poe was a gorgeous bird. In sorry for your loss.

Mealys are my favorite, but I don't believe they are big talkers, though there's no guarantee with any bird. Good luck with your search.

im sorry.... i can see what a great bird he was. we'll all miss him

I am so sorry for your loss:(

I am so sorry! He was very handsome! Beautiful healthy plumage, he was taken very well cared of.

A Warm THANKS to Everyone for the condolences, The people here seem so much nicer than some other forums I have been on (not bird related)
I would like to get our new family member this coming year, My children really loved and miss Poe, so it looks like we will be getting a Yellow naped :)

On a GOOD note, I managed to get a "Pocket Poe" for our family to LOVE right now, we are VERY happy with her, she is a total sweetie, and VERY smart !!
I will admit I was afraid she would have the mentality of a Budgie, BUT she is really a Parrot !! I drove round trip about 170 miles to get her from a local Aviary
Anyone thinking of getting a Parrotlet? Do not hesitate to get one, I LOVE our baby, don't be fooled by their small size (they don't know they are small)

Hello Copperarabian,

My father was old school and only fed the bird a seed mix and veggies, fruit, etc, as soon as I got the bird I only fed him Harrisons High Potency (I would weigh him every week to make sure he was not getting "fat") and he only gained like 4 grams over the years so I just kept giving him the High Potency version because he never really gained any weight and I was scared he didn't really like them

I didn't get a post mortem, my daughter was just out of the hospital and she was still having seizures, it was a VERY scary time for our family, I almost wonder if my daughter missing for 17 days had an effect on the bird :(

Hello BirdyMomma,

I am SO Sorry for your loss, "utterly heartbreaking" is a very good way of describing it, I was very close to the bird, being the parent I am the family caregiver and watch over everyone so I would be with the bird more than the others, I still cry when I look at pictures of him and I am a grown man...

Poe was a gorgeous bird. In sorry for your loss.

Mealys are my favorite, but I don't believe they are big talkers, though there's no guarantee with any bird. Good luck with your search.

Hello thekarens,

I love the fact that Mealys are SO BIG !! I really can't keep a Macaw in my condo so a Mealy seemed like a nice choice, you don't see much video of them on the net but they seem VERY Sweet, Why are they your fav ?

Again, Thanks for the WARM welcome here, I am so glad to be here with you all !!

Joe

Poe looks more like a large Yellow Nape to me than a Mealy in the photos...
Could he have been a Mealy/Nape Hybrid? The main reason I say that is the eyes, and the yellow spots on the bird's nape. Most of the Mealy's I've worked with have been all green with maybe a spot on top of their head...

Regardless of what he was, he loved, and was loved. So, it really doesn't matter.

I always liked mealy's because they have one of the most even temperaments of the amazons. Those guys, and the little lilac crowns, and the yellow crowns... I think are the easiest amazons to work with.

My favorite bird of all time, though was my 38 year old blue front. Just as personable, loving, and clownish as these birds get...

Beautiful little parrotlet! They are fantastic little birds! She'll help to heal your heart

Who clips your birds wings? They are terribly over clipped! If you bird gets startled and tries to fly he will plummet to the ground, possibly breaking a keel. Proper clips will allow a parrot to safety flutter to the ground.

here's a proper clip

I LOVE my parrotlets! Congratulations on your new baby and she looks like a sweetheart. I have a bonded pair so their focus is on each other rather than me, but you're right about them not knowing they are small - the are big birds in little bodies. I'm so attached to them.

Hi Birdman, I think he said he'd like to get a mealy next, not that Poe was a mealy, but I could be wrong.

Joe, I've never owned a mealy, but every one I've met has seemed more even tempered than some of the other big zons and as silly as this seems I think they are gorgeous.

So sorry for your loss man. R.I.P. Poe, he is flying over the Rainbow Bridge now. Best wishes

Oh... JoeZon. So sorry to hear about Poe. So difficult. I love your photos. I think bringing a new birdy home to become part of your family forever is so wonderful. Perhaps you would be willing to rescue / adopt a bird in need of a new family. There are resources in your general geographical area.
