Just Lost My Amazon

Im so sorry for your loss :(

I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face. I am SO sorry for your loss! I recently lost my amazon, and although he wasn't with me for anywhere near as long, I know how it feels... I still cry, it still hurts. It's amazing how much they bond to us, and they do feel what we feel- they know when we're sad, happy, angry, stressed...and I do believe it affects them.
Getting another bird (or more birds) won't "replace" Poe, but it will help your hearts heal IMO. After Jackie's unexpected death, we ended up getting a baby galah...we just couldn't be without a parrot...the kind of love they give and the relationships we have with them- not everyone has that with their 'pets'.

Poe looks more like a large Yellow Nape to me than a Mealy in the photos...
Could he have been a Mealy/Nape Hybrid? The main reason I say that is the eyes, and the yellow spots on the bird's nape. Most of the Mealy's I've worked with have been all green with maybe a spot on top of their head...

Regardless of what he was, he loved, and was loved. So, it really doesn't matter.

I always liked mealy's because they have one of the most even temperaments of the amazons. Those guys, and the little lilac crowns, and the yellow crowns... I think are the easiest amazons to work with.

My favorite bird of all time, though was my 38 year old blue front. Just as personable, loving, and clownish as these birds get...

Hi Birdman666,

Yes Poe was a Yellow naped, He could talk and sing GREAT, My mother taught him to sing "Popeye the sailor man" and "God bless America" in an old school "Vibrato" that could really get your attention !!

My daughter loved it when he would raise his wings and lower his head in a little dance, she would say "Happy dance" in her squeaky high young girl voice and sure enough the bird started saying "Happy dance" in her EXACT voice, it was VERY eerie, more than once I would call my daughters name and then realize it was the bird

Beautiful little parrotlet! They are fantastic little birds! She'll help to heal your heart

Who clips your birds wings? They are terribly over clipped! If you bird gets startled and tries to fly he will plummet to the ground, possibly breaking a keel. Proper clips will allow a parrot to safety flutter to the ground.

here's a proper clip

Hi Copperarabian,

She has already started to heal all of our hearts, Thank you

Yes, I know, I am very guilty, I am planning to ease up on the trimming, she is a very strong-willed bird and wants what she wants, she only weighs 29.5 grams so she jumps and flies with a normally trimmed wing, Over a period of a week I kept trimming an 1/8 of an inch at a time till she stopped flying, I really HATE trimming them that much but she now stays on my shoulder, and I am able to train her better, we have very well padded carpet and I throw a quilt down under my chair.

Now instead of just jumping off she lets me know when she wants something and also I try to be very tuned in to her needs

I keep little bits of Millet all around my home (like little treat stations) and she knows it, so she'll be sitting on my shoulder and chirp and nibble my ear to let me know she wants something, she also pecks at my lip like I'm the mommy bird, we really seem to be getting closer everyday, she sleeps at my side between my forearm and side and she just loves that I put some pressure on her and snuggle her tightly. I guess you can tell I love her, I really didn't know how nice Parrotlets were.

This is also the first time in my life that I am starting with a baby bird, she is only like 9 weeks old, just weaned!! I feel like she really loves her new home, first of all she is now the center of attention in a very calm, quiet, environment, My kids and I keep to routines and she is learning so quickly!!

She is also learning to run in a Hamster wheel (she is really doing it)
Here she is eating boiled carrot and learning to run the wheel

And she VERY quickly learned to use a water bottle, Drinking from her glass water bottle took no time at all to teach her, it is very funny to watch, she comes up and taps the ball VERY FAST a few times with her tongue, she now does it UPSIDE DOWN !!! I like using the bottle, I think it keeps their water a bit cleaner and she still has a big stainless steel dish to bathe in

Hi Birdman, I think he said he'd like to get a mealy next, not that Poe was a mealy, but I could be wrong.

Joe, I've never owned a mealy, but every one I've met has seemed more even tempered than some of the other big zons and as silly as this seems I think they are gorgeous.

Hi thekarens,

You are right Poe was a Yellow naped, Its funny you say that about Mealys being gorgeous, I was thinking that too

I LOVE my parrotlets! Congratulations on your new baby and she looks like a sweetheart. I have a bonded pair so their focus is on each other rather than me, but you're right about them not knowing they are small - the are big birds in little bodies. I'm so attached to them.

Hi GaryBV,

It makes me wonder how many "parrot" people may have overlooked Parrotlets because of their size, They make GREAT apartment parrots !!

And from reading my text above I'm sure you realize how attached I am getting to her, We were originally going to get a blue male Parrotlet from the Aviary but when we got there we watched 5 or 6 of them together in an open container on the table and noticed she was very calm and seemed to be watching all the other birds, I put my finger to all of them and she was the only one that didn't really shy away from me in fear, seems like fate that she is Green like my Poe

You've heard of Cup of Soup? How about Cup of Parrot ? :)

Hi getwozzy,

I am so sorry for your loss also, BirdyMomma (a member here) said she also just lost an Amazon :( I am sorry to have brought up those feelings again

I wish I could get a Yellow naped for the kids for Christmas but I can't find one right now since it seems they mostly mate in the spring

It is amazing how much they bond to us, and I feel that this little Parrotlet knows what I am feeling, she seems to know when I am trying to get a rise out of her and responds very quickly !!

Here is a Baby Picture from the Aviary to Cheer You Up !! :smile015:
