Kakariki introduced to new friends...

Hi,
I have a Kakariki girl named Lotty, she is very timid and shy, untamed. She is about a year old and a new addition to the family. I have just been offer the opportunity to get a hand reared kakariki baby, I was just wondering if anyone knows how I would go about introducing the new baby to 'big sis' lotty...

I was also wondering if there was any chance that having a hand tame baby might help to tame Lotty more,... or will it cause 'jealousy' between them...

Any help will be appreciated thankyou... :green1:

I'd suggest that the older 'riki, seeing the younger bird come to hand and unafraid of humans might help tame the older bird- my limited experience with 'rikis is that females are quite timid even when hand-raised.

Yay for kakarikis!

I breed and handraise different parrot species but i specialize in Kakarikis.

Females when handraised are usually very sweet, and a little cuddly. Quite affectionate. Handraised males are EXTREMELY cheeky and adventurous, so more forward.

I have had a number of untame kaks tamed with the help of a handraised male kak. I have had 3 males housed with 4 females and all of them get along. So i think you'd be fine getting a handraised Kakariki to join your little flock.

As for introductions, when you're handling the handraised one, have your girl out nearby so she can witness it all. I'd also suggest having separate cages (at least for now) and have their cages beside each other so they can get used to each others presence etc. They'd do fine.

Thanks for the advice. I have another cage all ready to go, Iv just got to wait another couple of weeks before I can get the new riki. I cant wait

I had one years ago, they're wonderful birds!!! Mine wasn't supposed to be tamed. She was quite curious with us and became super friendly over time. They're not noisy sweet little birds!!!!
