For all of you Aussie's down there. I have a question, it's probably a really silly and dumb question but, do you guys sometimes see a kangaroo hop around in your yard? Like up here in NY, you might see a black bear in our yards. I've just always wondered because a kangaroo/wallaby, is one of my favorite animals.

HAHAHA yea the same ones that we ride to work lol.....jks

We don't usually see them in the heavily populated areas, but occasionally they venture into the residential areas and become big road hazards. Living in the foothills I do get to see plenty of them though, I would only have to walk for ten minutes to be in roo territory. I see plenty of Koalas in suburbia though. We have had a big dry the last few years so a lot of the wildlife has come down to the cities seeking water. I love roo's they are so fun to watch.

Also had a large flock of yellow tail black cocky's congregating out front of my house the last few weeks so plenty of stuff to see

That is soooo cool. I'm just fascinated by the wildlife of Australia, so much to see and a lot of diversity. I want to take a trip there someday.

It's awsome here. I live in the heart of Sydney so I don't get to see Roos or other marsupials but you don't have to go far out of the city to see them.

We do get lots of birds where I am - Rainbow Loris, Rosellas, Galahs, black & sulfur crested toos, kookaburras that wake you in the morning with thier laughing, magpies that attack you in spring.

I have to say we're pretty lucky and your right the diversity is incredible... and sometimes very dangerous

Ha ha ha.. YES! I get the occasional kanga hopping around as well as the kookaburras, wedgies, falcons, ibis, honeyeaters, rosellas, willie wagtails, rainbow lorikeets and Swooper ( my arch enemy ), who attacks me all year round and ONLY goes for me. I can't step out of the house without seeing him staring at me from a tree branch lol.

Interesting wildlife thread, I live on the edge of a city, on the edge dartmoor national park and 200 yds from national trust woodland. I have deer virtually on my doorstep and occasionally see beautifully coloured woodpeckers. I've yet to catch the woodpeckers on camera but the first time I saw one here I thought it was someone's escaped parrot lol. Below is a picture of some of the deer, sometimes the herds are of a dozen or more.

:eek:thats cool. Something I will never see here

I live just near the Dandenong ranges which is a beautiful national park and tourist area for anyone who wants to google. We also live near another national park that has lots of kangaroos and while they rarely leave the park you do get the odd one or two that stray onto main roads. If you live right near the parks you do get them in your yards but not often.

We also have some wonderful parrots that visit daily, Puffin calls out " where's the little birdies" when he hears them LOL.

We really are very blessed with our wildlife and the ease to access it however we also have some really nasty spiders and we sure do see them in our yards and our homes!

Okay, those of us in the US are amazed at the almost alien wildlife Down Under, but I bet for all of you, while appreciated and cool, maybe a little common place.

Living so close to a very large metropolitan area, one would think that I don't get to see much wildlife, but we have a grown falcon population here - feeding on pigeons. We also have armadillos everywhere and coyotes are seen in the middle of Dallas. My co-worker has a bobcat living in her neighborhood. And there are always racoons and possum hanging about. I still love to see them, but it's not like a koala in your trees or kangaroon in the park.

I grew up in rural Montana and we saw eagles and elk often as well as white-tail deer (much bigger than the ones here in Texas), antelope and the occassional porcupine and fox. When we lived in South Texas along the Rio Grande River we saw flocks of wild Mexican parrots. I have no idea what species they were, but they made great sounds. We lived on South Padre Island for a few years and would often have dolphins come right up to our boat. I never got tired of that.

I can honestly say I don't take our wildlife for granted, I get enormous pleasure from it. We take quite a few interstate trips and I always get upset at the amount of roadkill on our roads.

We have possums in all neighbourhoods and flying foxes in quite a few and foxes in the metro areas, it is quite common to see them. We have a hotel near us and it has a lot of grassland around it and come 5pm the grass is teeming with wild rabbits and sadly quite a few domestic ones people have dumped there.

When we retire my husband and I want to buy a few acres and I would love to have a sanctuary for injured native animals there.

In New York, the wildlife is great too! I live in a big town, but we have lots of woods around here. In my backyard, the best thing to see is either a black bear or the rabbit family living in our yard (there's 9 rabbits, lol). We also see skunks, otters (we live near a stream that goes into the Hudson), raccoons. We also see a lot of birds especially woodpeckers. The wake us up on spring mornings with all of their racket. Also we see Blue Jays, Cardinals, Robins, Finchs, and Crows. It's not the bad but not too interesting, LOL.

AP I'm sure its not that boring lol, I would love to see some of those animals in the wild (although perhaps not the skunk, I hear they leave quite a stench lol).

I can honestly say I don't take our wildlife for granted.

LoL you got that right. I've been trying to get a picture of this giant flock of black cockatoos to share with you guys. Problem is, every time I see them fly past, I can't run and get the camera, because I just stand there captivated with my jaw at my feet .

I am totally going to Australia some time. :D

I think we have at least 4 of our 8 states covered by forum members so you have accomodation almost sorted ... hope you other Aussies don't mind me offering your houses up for guests :D

Heya!

Not sure if you'll be able to access this link or not but worth a try

I live in the Hills District in Sydney. We've got signs up on the main road waring drivers of Kanganroos but never in the 23 years that I've lived here have I seen one hopping around the place.

That was until about 2 months ago. I was out the front with my Mum and this little Kangaroo came hopping across our lawn. As you'll be able to see in the pics (hopefully) she's very tame which makes us think she was hand reared.

Gorgeous little thing!

I love this thread! I want to see a kangaroo and koala so bad lol! I have lived all over but never been to Australia, I cant wait to finally get there!

I am always amazed at all the people who come to florida and cant believe we have alligators all over. I see gators at leastt once a week in lakes or canals or sun bathing on the grass along the highway. They have a place called gator land here where you can pay to go see gators. I never understood why you would pay to see them.. they are boring lol! Its probably similar to when I lived in Malaysia and we had monkeys every single day in our backyard. They were a pest to us and AMAZING to those who visited. I promise they are a pest... my dog was slapped by one and to this day still refuses to go outside at night by himself. I also got out of the shower one morning to find one with its faced plastered against the window staring at me. I almost had a heart attack right then!
