Kou Passed away

I'm so sorry for your loss!! :(

If you put in a call to your local Humane Society and describe the bad conditions, and let them know your bird passed away, they will go and investigate, and possibly seize the birds and/or shut them down.

I once went into a newly opened pet shop in my area and the conditions were horrific for all the different species. I called the Humane Society as soon as I got home, and they said it had only been open for a week and they'd already received dozens of complaints!! They were shut down within two weeks of opening, the animals were all seized and placed with local rescues.

Sorry for your loss...a day, a week, it doesn't take long to get attached to a feathered friend...:(

Wow, this is sad. So sorry. I'd have them checked out. Good luck. And, PLEASE disinfect, or get rid of, anything you used for this bird before your Grey comes home, or any other bird uses them. Especially the cage, perches & toys. Wash it with a bleach solution, or at least, a vinegar solution.

I'm throwing away all his toys and disinfecting his cage and going to use alot of Lysol around the house. I'm not going to risk my grey. And they refused to do anything, said he probably had a cold. I don't believe this and on top of that, they were rude about it. His nostils were clean and not running and he did sneeze a little one day but not much and hadn't since that day. Anyway I'm going to get that place inspected.

And thank you, you all have made it easier to deal with! I appreciate all of you!

Nothing eases the burden of loss more than sharing it with others who understand.

I also once purchased a bird who was sick from the day i got him. Fortunately, he showed signs of illness and gave me enough time to get him to an avian vet, so he did recover, but it definitely can happen that you get one who appears fine but is ill from day one.
Sorry for your loss!!

Uh.... birds don't get colds! Yes, they can get sick with bacterial or fungal infections, but they do not get colds.

I'm sorry for the loss of Kou and sorry you are dealing with a crappy pet store! As much as people want to help animals by taking them out of bad situations, sometimes you do more harm than good. You take a bird out of a situation by paying for it, and you open up the space for another bird. It would be a repeatable cycle that wont stop until the place is either shut down or people stop buying from them, forcing them to close.

A necropsy can be done for as little as $5-$20 possibly, through an agricultural department. Most avian vets charge $80-$200. If you could prove that Kou was sick when you purchased him, the store would be obligated to compensate you somehow, although I don't know if it would be worth your time and money for that route. If the place is not as clean as it should be, you are right to report it to someone.

I didn't know they couldn't get colds. Thank you for the information!
