Our newly adopted greater sulpher has decided that despite what I may think, she and I are friends (When she wants only though). This morning I spent an hour plus getting to her food dish to change out her veggies, and then I went off to classes. When I got home she was clucking at me, so I offered her the perch I've been using to move her to and from the cage (to save my hands from her very strong lunging bites) and she climbed up it and onto my arm very quickly. Now every time I get near she jumps for my arm to perch on, I guess that's a plus? we're bonding somewhat....
That being said, now that she's let me get up close I've noticed that what we thought was an oddly placed fat pouch is indeed an oddly placed fat mass on the abdomen directly above her right foot, with a hard mass in the center about he size of a chickpea from the feel of it surrounded by about a golfball sized amount of fat/tissue. (this mass is skin colored)
In addition I also noticed a dark mass to the left of her anus. This mass is intestinally colored...I'm really afraid this is a hernia/prolapse of some sort. It is hard, lumpy, and dark/like I mentioned as if you're viewing intestines through thinly stretched bird skin. In its entirety this mass is golf-ball sized as well.
I made a vet appointment for thursday, the soonest they had that I wasn't taking exams. I'm hoping that I'm over reacting, but this bird may be in some pretty bad pain if I'm correct. I hate to see what people let happen to birds they "Love so much" :/ just by not watching them closely. Maybe I'm OCD, but I notice every mislayed feather in my eclectus and lesser sulpher and I couldn't imagine not seeing these two significanty sized masses on my bird.
Not sure if anyone else as seen masses on their birds/birds they've taken in...But any info/reassurance would be appreciated. It certainly breaks my heart that this bird is so starved for attention, and I may have to put her down on thursday, but we're committed to do whatever is best for her considering her health, her quality of life, and somewhat the cost after the vet gives us an idea.
(Wish Baxter luck)
