Meet Phillip :)

Ok, I'll have to read those. He's isolated from the budgies (totally different floor of the house) and I was my hand after feeding and watering them. :)

He's really good with the whole family. Sometimes he'll fly to Dad to see what he's doing, right now he's snuggling with Mom.

He's getting settled in so much that he's showing his emotion much more. He's so sassy when he doesn't want something. He'll be on Mom and I'll try to pick him up and he'll backtalk me while flapping his wings once. So cute!

I'm sure you've read the post on the dog attack, we had one last month on a GCC. Please cats eat birds, and the movement of your bird can trigger a cats prey drive at any time. Cats are masters of indifference, do not let that fool you that the cat isn't interested in eating your GCC! I would never have the cat free when you have the GCC out, if your GCC fluttered to the floor after being spooked by a noise, the cat can pounce quickly. Cats can also kill a GCC through the bars of a cage, or scratch leading to a deadly infection. You need to have a family house conference on how to handle thses two living in the same house. I just don't want anything to happen to Phillip!!!! Please don't believe that your cat is laid back, and wouldn't attack, it's hard wired instinct for them to do so. I would keep Phillip flighted to help , and the cat put in a can't carrier, or closed into a bedroom when the bird is out. I fostered a sick elderly cat that seemed to have no interest in the parrots, she got out of her bedroom one night and was attacking the cage at 3 am. Needless to say she went back, and I stopped fostering both cats and dogs. Ok I just had to day all that, we don't want anymore injured birds!!! I look forward to even more Phillip pictures. How did you choose the name? Most unusual ;)

LeslieA I think that's a great topic for a thread. Not that your veterinary lied to you! But what does your veterinary recommend?! My much loved previous vet recommend tests and blood work followed up by tests and blood work 30 days later but this was for an older adult parrot, maybe age plays a factor, or just like humans doctors they all practice slight different. Would make for an interesting topic, as I never hear anyone talking about end of quarantine testing...
I rescue and rehome older birds and get either breeder baby or pet store baby. I recently adopted and rehomed 2 conures that are only 19mo now. My AV, as stated, 30- 90 days for older or medium to large parrots and 30- 45 days for medium and smaller depending on test results. I get AV discounts based on history, etc. so take each bird at the beginning and, again, at the end of quarantine before mingling with my flock. The quarantine period is then followed by a 7- 10 day "familiarity" period. For example, my Blue-crowned Conure had a quarantine of 45 days while my GCC only 30. My WCP got 60 days of quarantine.

Please don't be all concerned, WiseOwl5. We are talking about multibird homes!

The cats gets put outside when Phillip is outside of the cage. As much as he is a laid back cat, he can't hold back the instincts so we'd rather not take the risk. When Phillip is in his cage, we watch the cat closely and make sure he doesn't go near his cage (or even in the same room for that matter). Also, Phillip can fly really well despite having a part clip but I still wouldn't risk it.

As for the name, it's from a book I used to read when I was younger. You'll have to guess it. :)

Philip Blagdon, a wizard who likes cauldron cakes?? (Harry Potter, but that character has 2 "ls.")

Nope, I've never read Harry Potter. :)

Hmmm, I'd have to Google, and that'd be cheating! :D

Lol. It's from a book called "The Hatchling". :)

It's wonderful that you wash your hands, but you know that's not all. Also, you're not the only one around Phillip. Can you guarantee that minimum is ALWAYS happening? Has he been back to your AV to be cleared? It's in your and his best interest.

When we can get him an CAV we will. We live 4 hours from the nearest city that has one (I looked it up) so we can't atm. It would be a day long trip for the whole family, and my Dad has work that he has to get time off from. I can't drive myself or I would (I don't have my driver's) so for the time being we can't get him to an avian vet. I'd like to, and I get the concern, but it's not possible at the moment. :)

My family rarely goes up where the budgies are (except for me), but when they do I'll make sure they change their clothes and wash their hands. Phillip never goes up there either. I'll read those articles your guys linked to to make sure I'm not missing anything. :)

Lol yep. :)

Phillip has discovered that gaming laptops create a lot of heat, and likes to perch on top of my brother's laptop when he's gaming. He then backtalks me (chirps and lifts his wings) everytime I try to give him head scratches. So cute!
