Lala is a 4+/- year old Goffin's Cockatoo rescued from the shelter October 13th 2017. Beautiful, spunky and loves love! 💘
Hey guys meet Winston! Winston is a 31yr old Yellow Naped Amazon! He's not my bird but honestly I really wish he was. I work for an elderly lady and Winston is hers. I believe my lady is Winston's only home. I fell in love with Winston 6 months ago. I don't think he's been out of his cage in at least 3 years except to go into a travel cage. Hasn't seen a vet in over a year I believe...I think maybe more. He seems healthy though, thank God! He doesn't pluck either. At least I haven't seen it. At one point he was bald in his life but that was long ago. He loves his spritz showers...it's hilarious! Sadly he's got 3 toys in his cage that I have never seen him play with...could he still bee a happy bird? I wouldn't think so but he seems healthy and isn't plucking...I feel bad.

When I first met him I talked to him and he responded and now I feed/water and change his cage and uncover him. He's talked to all day by my lady and I. He whistles and says one or two words...but I hear when he was out of his cage more he talked up a storm! He squawks...always seemingly happy but he is unusually quiet for his breed I think. She gets a good parrot mix and gives fresh veggies and fruit. I bring him treats now and then. If he's not in a rare bad mood he loves coming to the cage bars for a good yet guarded head rub. He has tried to bite but I forgive him and try training him as best I can not to bite by turning my back to him for a couple seconds. Then I come back and talk to him again throughout the day. I truly love this bird!

Anyway my time with Winston has helped my decision on adopting our own cockatoo and I wanted to introduce a big reason we have Lala now. He's a little camera shy so getting a suitable photo was hard! Meet Winston!!

Hello to Winston! Unfortunately the picture did not show up for me. Try using Flickr, maybe?

I'm glad Winston is getting good care, Amazons are special birds with incredible personalities. Is there a reason you don't want to open the cage door and let him come out? He may really enjoy it and may start talking more :)

Congratulations! It's good you had experience with a bird before you jumped on board. You can understand the demands a parrot needs. And yeah being around a parrot, on some basic level, makes you want to get an avian owner, they are so amazing!

I guess you "kinda sorta" have two birds now, just be careful introducing the two search the archive for introducing birds together.

Oh no Winston isn't my bird. He lives with one my clients that I take care for. She doesn't let him out because she says he bites and she hasn't gotten his wings clipped so she is afraid he'll fly into a window. She asked me to find someone who will clip at home so im doing that.

I try and affect his life in posative ways but I can't do more than I'm allowed. Again I'm just a care giver...not her children or family and she's unable herself to take him out.

She doesn't have anything set up on paper for what happens to Winston in the event of her death but I'm hoping that maybe shed consider me because her kids dont show interest. I just want what's good for him.

So I do what I can when I can.

But Winston isn't mine and she won't allow him out. I love my lady but she she's had him for 30 plus years when we didn't have all this good info on exotic birds.

I myself have some experience with birds but Amazon's are new to me. I research for Winston though.

I get that winston is hers, and you have lala now you said...but you care for both....so your like a godfather to winston? something like that.

Your a parent and a godfather is kinda what I meant.

Ha ha *scratches chin* I am the godfather. Lol

hey there,

it may be an idea to try offering to adopt Winston sooner rather than later? Of course in as polite a way as you can. she clearly struggles to give him adequate care at least in our modern eyes and like you say there's nothing set up for when she passes in the future and unfortunately care would default to her children who most likely will see a way to make an easy bit of money from him which yes you could offer them to take him but you'd lose out on some money which could go towards him when speaking to her would mean he went straight to you

Maybe start slowly I'm sure you talk about Lala to her often, it's not every day people find other bird enthusiasts. Maybe say that Lala might need a friend for whilst you're out helping people?

I definitely see the lady's stance on Winston, just feels a little unfair for him to be cooped up all day, despite it not being her fault in any way.

This is where I'd make the customary joke I'd put a parrot gang up against the.... But then the mods are like you can't say that...so I won't....I'll just say a parrot gang could take over the whole world!!!!!!!! :D

I totally agree! Yes that's what I'm working on. She said to Winston look She forgot all about when I was telling her about Lala and I was like oh no if take him in a heartbeat. That's why I've attuned the role of feeding him and everything and changing his liners and all that. I'm hoping She see in a better fit. I could politely ask but I don't think I'm there yet you know? But definitely I will.

I'm also thinking of getting him some toys too...I'm sure shed let me if I just showed up with them. Because it's not fair to Winston.

Ha ha ha.

Thanks guys! Ill keep y'all updated!

Oh and I've tried several tunes with Flickr and its not working...the link doesn't take you to the Google album it's on?

yes I get what you mean perfectly, like you feel comfortable talking about Winston and Lala and helping but that conversation about what happens a few years from now just doesn't feel right to be had. Fingers crossed things work out with Winston

Thank you!

Just don't be one of those assholes that exploits from a susceptible adult, then i'd have to..... I would be up front with her. Tell her you love Winston and ask her if you can continue to care for him in the future. I'm sure she'd agree if she loves him. Ask should we put it on paper or will your family honor it. Be up front, tell her you love her bird so much you bought one yourself, any bird lover will see that this is the best course of action. If I was suddenly stricken with something like old age my first thoughts would be of who would take care of clark...

oh yes definitely clark, I don't think there was any question over taking advantage of this lady. Just building up to a point where that conversation can be politely had

Mango i love the idea of bringing him a couple new toys to play with!

I hope everything goes well for you Mango just be honest!

Definitely. I'm not sure if you know what CNA is but you cage for people who are most likely stick. I myself take care of the elderly. I live my job and hold myself to high ethics and I would never take advantage of anyone let alone do it on purpose.

You guys are awesome thank you so much for the advise!!😃😃

And I thank you for your service....I was just being the.....hell i dunno what you call it the reminder to your conscience.. Just ask her.. she probably has it planned that way anyways, might be a relief off her mind to know her pet will go to a good home

Lol lol. Man I love this site lol
