Minmum Cage Size (Sleeping Only)

Hello all,

What would be the minimum Cage Size for GCC (Sleeping Only?)

I don't think there is much activity during the night, so, unsure what would be the minimum cage size for sleeping.

Right now we have something which is pretty big, but, its old, and i want to replace it.

If you can show some examples, it would be very much appreciated.

If it is just to sleep you dont need much a travel size cage. Use your best judgment I think.

It really all depends on what you want for your bird. Ideally, the bird should be able to spread its wings from one end to the other without touching the bars. That way it has room to move around in.

The sleep cage I got Skittles is actually the same exact kind of cage I had originally kept him in before I bought him his 'condo'.

The more roomier the cage, the more comfortable they will feel in it. You don't want it too cramped. With a travel cage, you don't want it too big cause you don't want the bird to be able to be thrown around.

I do keep fresh food and water in Skittles sleep cage. That way if he's hungry or thirsty during the night he has it.

Keep in mind, suns are bigger than green cheeks, so you can go smaller than what I got. What I would do is compare your birds regular cage to what Skittles has for a regular cage and then use that same comparison for the sleep cages. For example, if your birds day cage is 25% smaller than Skittles day cage, than I'd go with a sleep cage 25% than Skittles sleep cage.

Yep, right now ... he has it all. Food / Size, but, the cage needs to be replaced.

I think ... i have my answer there Now i just need to find something that is not very expensive, as i will probably need 2, since we are thinking about getting another GCC.

I think the day cage is exactly the same as what Abby has.

As for the night cage, i even think that her current cage is a bit bigger, so, yea, that explains it.

I'd never heard about having more than one cage for birds and I now want to have a sleep cage for my guys. After reading the article (I posted above) and reading everyone's comments, makes me realize that this really sounds like a great idea. Now to clean & rearrange so I can make this happen.

Well, the idea is for them to be together in the day cage.
Hopefully no fighting

If that works out, then, ya, as you say one night cage should be good enough, makes sense.

I've never used a sleep cage. Kiwi just gets covered at night.

I think though for the purposes of sleeping only, as long as the bird can turn around and spread it's wings, a small cage would be fine. For a conure sized bird, a large budgie cage would probably work and be low cost.

We live in an apartment, and i work from home (late night/morning) 2am - 4am.
Day cage is in the living room, where i work.

I make sometimes some noise / phone calls / etc, so, i don't think its good space for her to "SLEEP" (I personally couldn't, so, i think Abby would be the same )

She sleeps with my wife and me in the room ( O_O ) , but soon, she will have 'her own room' (another bathroom which is big size and we hardly use, which is part of the same room whee my wife and me sleep ).

It will be more quieter and more dark.

+ Winter is coming to Canada (Brrrr) and i think that "room" will be perfect for her.

I think the sleep cage idea is really owner-specific. If your sleep schedule coincides with your birds- then a sleep cage is really not necessary.

But for me, I am a night owl. I got to bed about 6-8hrs AFTER I put Skittles to bed. So for my lifestyle, a sleep cage is a necessity.

When I used to have a lot of behavioral issues with him- a lot of them happened when he was sleeping in the living room. I think part of it was that he was not getting enough sleep. Skittles is VERY active during the day and seems to prefer around 14hrs of sleep a night.

Plus, I sleep better at night with his cage right by my side.

I see ... well, Abby goes to sleep at around 8-9pm, my wife take her out of the cage at around 7-8am in the morning, when she wakes up (kids as well), as i sleep longer ;p

Ours have sleep cages, in their own room. It's so nice to have the extra room for them. Once we put them to bed, we don't have to worry with being quiet or being up late. Once they are in bed we never hear a peep from them until I turn on their light in the mornings.

I just made a small wall shelf for the cage in the 'bathroom' (or Abby's room, as nobody is using it).

Right now, there is a cage that i am planing on replacing.
