My parrots sick :(

Yeah hopefully we get Finbar home soon. According to the vet and other sources its good to have a UV light on for 2 hours a day. Along with this we will be switching Finbar to a pellet diet rather than '****ty' parrot seed excuse my french. Yeah its horrible to when they take seizures I feel so helpless and yet all i can do is hold onto him with the towel and try sooth him, espically when he comes round.

Yes, you need to switch him to pellets, too. And I would leave the UV light on more than 2 hours, especially at first because he really needs the vitamin D from it right now to process the calcium. I have mine on at least 4 hours a day, and when I first bought them my BCC was lacking in UV rays so I was leaving them on for 6-8 hours. She actually sat under it with her wings out to soak it up.

I bought clip lights from Walmart and the bulbs from Feather Brite. I don't know your location, or if that info is helpful to you or not.

Sorry its been a while. We took Finbar back to the vet, he got worse.. then got better. After 3 days staying at the vets, they received the blood tests Finbar had Toxic poisoning and extremely low calcium levels, this had built up before we had bought him and slowly ended up sadly passing away last week. :(

R.I.P Finbar :(

I am so very sorry to hear this.

I am so sorry to hear that. Poor little guy. :(

I'm very sorry to read this! What kind of toxicity did he have? Poor baby. At least he had a loving home in the end.

Where did you get him from???? It sounds quite strange for him to have a toxic poisoning and low calcium level at that young of a age....It just makes me wonder what he was being fed....

Oh... Noooo... So sorry to hear this...

Do you know about the toxins? What were they?

Unfortunately Greys seem even more prone to suffering from low calcium levels. I am also wondering what toxin they found if you are willing to share that with us during your time of grief?

Hello guys,

Sorry about the late reply's and i really do appreciate the comments its horrible to lose a bird, its was very hard for my mother anyways still is.

Apparently Zinc and Led Toxic poisoning. Along with the calcium deficiency. The thing is according to the vet and insurance etc this takes a long time to happen. We had Finbar just over a month. So according to the vet he wasn't taking care of at a young age. We got him from a pet shop near where we live, there was a lot of different types of animals and birds there, you'd of thought it was a decent shop obviously not.

We are going to get another parrot, in fact we already put deposit down. Hes going to be called bandit and he is from a proper breeder we get him in May. We are not 'just' replacing Finbar, he was an amazing parrot and we do miss him a lot. Feels so weird not having him around.

Again thanks for all the kind comments, its very much appreciated.

Sean

I'm so sorry to hear of Finbar's passing. You and your mom were good parronts to him.

I can't wait to hear all about Bandit! What kind of parrot is he/she?

I'm so sorry someone didn't take good care of Finbar before you got him. You did the best you could for him, and I hope that gives you some comfort.

A new bird can definitely help with the grieving process. What kind of bird did you choose?

Hey guys,

Again thanks for the kind comments. Bandit is a African Gray too.. but he is bread from a proper breeder.
I believe Bandit is only a few weeks old Il get the pics off mom and upload them for you.
Yes Finbar was a lovely looking little guy! Bless him! I guess this time we will make sure everything is one hundred percent correct.

Thankyou so much for your kind words, my son sent me here to see all your lovely posts.
Its been hard loosing Finbar and only having him for a short time and so many things wrong with him at a young age the pet shop owner needs shot in my opinion. At least i can say for the short time he was with us he was loved dearly he was a cheeky chap and it broke my heart to loose him.
I had no intention of getting another bird nobody could replace Finbar, but i got talking to a lovely lady who breeds greys and she does not advertise she picks you i am fortunate to be offered one of her babys she is a wonderful lady who cares for her birds.
I still feel guilty that i am getting another bird....hopefully this will pass. Finbar is at peace now and back home with us fly free baby boy xx

Here is a pic of our new addition to be called Bandit

Parrots can touch your heart in a special way. Finbar had a very loving owner and loving home at the end of his short life. I hope you take comfort from that.

The forum lets us know that there are others out there that can share their wisdom and knowledge with those of us that are new to birds.

Have fun with your new buddy!

Congrats on getting your new baby Bandit. :) Its unfortunate that you lost Finbar at such a young age :( But im sure your new addition will bring you many years of happiness. :)

Oh and welcome to the forum Astrolady :)

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Bandit is adorable!
