Need your help!!!

@Nicky76 just found this and think it might be of interest to you Why Essential Oils Are Good For Your Bird ? Apologies if you already have this knowledge.

Thank you, we've got coconut oil so might try a bit. Got to be careful with his weight though. X

That's what I thought too until I read
"Coconut oil has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer and other degenerative conditions, improving cholesterol levels and helping fight heart disease. Aiding in relieving arthritis and helping balance the body’s metabolism and hormones, coconut oil can improve the quality of skin and feathers and reduces allergic reactions. Obtain organic, virgin coconut oil that has been cold or expeller-pressed."

Hi Nicky,

Great job with Archie! It sounds like you have really done all you can to ensure his health and happiness and that is awesome.

I agree with you, towel him for now. As long as he is getting the medication he needs, thats the most important thing :)

As for food: Sounds like whoever had him before had him on a primarily sunflower seed diet. But I have great news! Unlike some other pets, birds will not starve themselves. They can be extremely picky, certainly, but if you don't give in - they will.

Offer him the occasional sunflower treat like you have been doing. But offer him up the food you want him to eat daily, just put it in his food bowls and leave it there. When he gets hungry, he will eat it. Even if it takes a day or two (some times more).

Keep in mind, when a bird goes to a new home it is expected that they will loose up to 10% of their body weight within the first 2 weeks. Seems like a lot right! But don't worry. This is a natural part of their acclamation process. So during that time you will notice that he won't eat much. Don't worry, once he gets used to you and his new home, his appetite will increase.

Good luck!

Just to offer my 2 cents...

The Rickeybird has always been light-weight... when you pick him up, you're a little surprised at how light. But over 30 years, he's been steady at about 250 grams. Two avian vets have told me that this species is typically lighter than other birds of similar size (a general veterinarian told me he was skinny). His body is about the length of an African Grey. He's about 18 inches long (nine of that is tail) and he looks and feels very healthy and happy at that weight.

This thread continues to be one of my very favorites.

Thanks everyone. Archie is fully on pellets now but is still fussy about veg. But his feathers are growing back nicely :)

My friends Patty is fussy with veggies also. (He is due for a stay.) He seems to have developed a liking for Nutriberries though. He does like a little soaked bread and I am going to try mixing this with some homemade chop and let you know how it goes. Liked veggies rotate between sweetcorn and peas mainly. Sometimes will pinch off his mums plate!!

He'll eat banana but only if I'm eating it ;) think he's just a bit grumpy because his feathers are growing back.

The RB is fussy AND inconsistent. One day he likes carrots, the next day he throws them at the walls. Same with everything else but the pellets and the green chile he gets every day. After 32 years, my husband and I figured out how much we have spent on that chile-a-day policy... we could have bought a nice used car.

Great news Archie's bloods have come back normal :)

So a good diet and a great avian vet really do make a difference :)

That's great news!!!! :D

Can't wait to see some photos after he goes through a full molt!!!! I really feel as if he'll change color and will look healthier and brighter!!!

Archie is now on half dose of allopurinol and no painkillers and is doing great [emoji122]
All his bloods are still normal.

He must be feeling better because he's getting cheeky and is much more active than he was when he first arrived ❤️

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, Archie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He must have an amazingly strong life force... will to live... after all he's been through!

Maybe he'll enjoy this vid of wild Archies and Rickeys...

Here's a vid on the conservation efforts. It's in Spanish, but basically she's describing the program and some of the birds' habits. The chicks stay in the burrows, in the dark, for two months! Then they're gradually weaned over the next few months. I know that the Rickeybird was weaned at 10 weeks, sold to a store at 11, and I got him at 12. He should have been only a month out of the dark, and still being weaned in the wild. It's a marvel they make it. What a journey.

Makes my heart soar to watch them!

I'm so glad that Archie is doing so well! That's great news, thank you for the update:)

Thanks for the video Gail :) Wow the noise there would be deafening!! One Archie at full pelt is pretty loud.

RB is obviously made of tough stuff too :)

I love our little cheeky boys ❤️

No kidding... absolutely deafening!
I'm going to have a hearing test this week. No problem anticipated... it's just free and I'm curious since I know most people have loss after middle age. If I *DO* have a significant loss, I'll have to wonder if it is in any part due to a screaming parrot in my ear for 30 years!!!

So glad to hear that Archie is doing so well Thats Brilliant news...I love the video of the wild cousins too Wow ! hope it cheered Archie up too I bet he enjoyed hearing them :)

I played it to him but don't think he has any idea he's a parrot as he ignored it haha
