I ended up with a new bird today, a bit unexpectedly. I had been looking and thinking but wasn't expecting it to happen today. He is a jenday\sun approximately 5 years. I don't know much more. I wasn't sure I really believed the lady and she was lacking specifics. I'm renaming him Ziggy. He was Simba, hasn't really reponded to it and I just can't handle that as a bird name.

One thing worried me. After being around him just minutes my throat, tonsils and ears went nuts. We met the lady half way as it would have been a four hour drive for us. The first thing I noticed about the woman was her smell...perfume, air freshener or something very strong. Once his cage was In our car that was all I could smell. His cover was saturated with it. So I think it's his cover and cage that I'm reacting to. None of my other birds have ever done this. Does that sound right or should I be worried it's him?

And last, when keeping quarantined, can they use the same area at different time or is too close of contact?

I know strong perfumes irritate my nose and sinus. Gives me headaches also. It's not good for birds to be around strong smells either. I'm sure he'll be glad to get away from it also. He's a cutie. Congrats!

I'm not an expert but he looks like a nanday cross sun conure.
Maybe not sunny but definitely a nanday cross something.

With a good wash for him and his cover the smell should go in time, and though I haven't had to quarantine before I would keep him separate from any play areas for the quarantine. Just my opinion.

Congrats on your attractive new guy. Definitely part Nanday . He should be fine away from the toxic air now lol, sounded horrible. I prefer the name Ziggy over Simba for a bird too.

I always take new birds (especially when you don't know the history) for a vet check and disease testing and not just rely on quarantine. There is no way to do complete quarantine anyway unless you have him in a building with a separate air source, change clothes, wash your shoes, bathe and wash your hair every single time you see the bird . We just do the best we can instead. At least separate room, wash hands and arms, and change shirt if bird goes on it.

I was thinking definitely Nanday because of the black head and blue chest, and maybe part Jenday because of the red belly and head and solid green back. Not that it matters . He's pretty.

On the down side I've learned he has no clue what "step up " means. He just runs around the cage. I had to forcibly remove him in order to clean his cage. And our quarantine was messed up when we discovered he can fly and landed on Buzz's cage. Thankfully my son got to him before Buzz did.

On the up side his bites are nothing compared to Buzz! He doesn't seem to mind being handled once he's out of the cage.

There are no breeds of conures... and except for English/Show budgies, there are no "breeds" of parrots, either...


I would guess he's most likely sun x nanday, although you probably can't rule out jenday or gold cap, either. I'm guessing sun though, since he looks a little more towards orange rather than red. Jendays and gold caps are both red where-as suns are more orange.

Are there any foods that you might be allergic to that Ziggy was possibly eating? Or maybe cage substrate? (another possibility)

That is some sort of hybrid. Definitely NOT a sun/jenday...

Sunday conures are more orange and yellow, and look more like Jendays with a tad more color on the wings.

Really hard to tell, but at age five he's got his adult colors.

Could be Nanday/Sun. He's certainly got the classic Sun Conure facial expressions going on.

Haven't seen all that many cross bred conures, so I really don't know. They mostly do that sort of stuff with Macaws.

Looking at the pictures I would think you are right about the nanday cross. Like I said I didn't really trust the lady that much. The original picture she sent made him look like a green cheek but was so close you couldn't see much but his face, so I was surprised when I saw all of him. Is there anything you do different when you have a hybrid?

She told me he was cage aggressive but friendly when he came out, that her grandkids handled him. He will not come out on his own and knows no commands. He says two things all the time. One I can't understand, the other is "I'm gonna hurt it". I'm hoping he wasn't the it being hurt. Once we fight about coming out, usually me grabbing him or toweling him, he is good with me. He cuddles and grooms my hair. He does not like my son and only tolerates my husband.

After throughly washing his cage yesterday I made him a snuggle hut which he seems to like. I also found he will try to do what I tell him if I reward with a tiny piece of sunflower seed. While everything I was told hasn't been accurate, I think he has done well for only two days.

Be careful having a snuggle hut (if you mean the tube shaped one), they can incite hormonal behaviour.

He's new, in a new place with new people so he will be skittish to come out but it's sound likes he's happy once he;s out. Though I think it could be a good idea to give him some days where you open the door and let him do what he wants (offer him treats to come out).

Not really. Nanday x sun/jenday/gold cap hybrids are fertile, and I have yet to hear of any health issues in these birds... so I'd say these hybrids are rather healthy individuals!

If you were forced to come out of your home, might you also be cage aggressive?


Once we fight about coming out, usually me grabbing him or toweling him, he is good with me.
Why not use those sunflower seeds to teach him to come out of his cage on his own rather than forcing him out by grabbing him by hand or with a towel? It would be so much less stressful on the two of you! And will help to build a stronger bond!

The main reason I took him out against his will was to scrub his cage and shower him. He still smells like smoke but not as much as he did. I haven't taken him out the past two days but have left his doors open. He did pop out the door once today because he wanted what I was eating, chocolate so I couldn't share. As soon as he was out he looked around, got scared and ran back in. But I consider it progress. He seems nervous about hands but will take seeds from me through the cage.
