Hello all!
I recently brought home a young Sun Conure, so welcome Phoebe! Her name is taken from Flame Princess in Adventure Time. All my other pets share this name theme.
She came home last Wednesday, and I left her in her cage for the day so she can get used to her new environment. For these subsequent days, I’ve begun some training and interacting.
I’m working on stepping up first, of course. She’s loving the treats I give her and I feel like everything is going well!
But there are some things I’m struggling to understand when it comes to her body language.
Phoebe is fully weaned and eating normal food on her own, although it seems to me that she still has some “baby instincts”. These are what I’m struggling to understand.
I am not used to these baby behaviors, as Fern never showed any when I brought her home.
What I’d like help understanding is what her body language means and why she’s doing it. I’ll describe it as well as provide clips. (The clips do not show every example exactly)
She vocalizes a lot. I know that Sun Conures are a lot more noisy and loud than GCCs, although I don’t understand what kinds of vocalizations they are and what they mean.
She’ll stand really low and look up at me as if she’s receiving food from her mama, although she isn’t trying to feed (bobbing head rapidly as a baby is fed).
She does get very excited when I show her a treat, she’ll flap a bunch, vocalize a bunch, then come running towards.
She does a lot of baby flaps, and she’s wary of my hands (of course she is she just came home).
She’s a little clumsy and learning how best to move around in her cage, sometimes I see her trip like a goofball XD
Another thing I’m stumped on is that when I take her out of her cage, she can only go a minute or a few before getting antsy to get back to her cage, and I don’t know how to approach that or what to do to move forward with her.
By looking at her and how she moves and behaves, to me it’s clear that she’s still quite a baby.
Overall, I’m unfamiliar with the typical behavior of a baby Sun Conure (Fern was still young but older when I got her), what to expect, and how to go about training and interacting.
I’ve done some research but none of what I look up provides any exact details.
Maybe I’m wrong about the whole “baby” thing. Maybe the process is just different for a Sun than a GCC. Maybe I just had it extremely easy with Fern because she didn’t do any of the things Phoebe is, and because we clicked with each other super easily.
Whatever the case is, I’d appreciate anything helpful!
Wish me luck on this new journey
