Cricket -C.A.G
Ok, since I have moved back home with the folks everyone had been drooling over my birdie. My mom even told me it was her bird now  yeah right.
My grandmother comes over just to visit Cricket... even if Cricket gives her, what we call, the pterodactyl (dinosaur) scream. Peta knows what I am talking about... its too funny, but very loud. Anyways my grandma (in her 60's, young family :p )
was talking about how she would like one.
I don’t know what would be a good type for her... I know she would spoil it to death. But I would still need a very forgiving bird, able to deal with her.. umm... craziness? Not sure how to explain. She wouldn’t hit the bird, think she would deff yell at it, positive the bird would learn every swear word in the book (not the cookie baking stereotypical grandmother I know) I tried to take her into getting a teil. My biggest concern is her letting the bird out and not being able to get it back in (due to fear?) I explained to her that no matter what bird she gets she will end up bitten. Another fear is her not being able to tolerate the time it will take to get a bird to warm up to her. And I know she deff wants a talker.
You guys have any ideas on a good species to look into. I know some one with a couple birds that aren’t in great condition who I would love to find better homes for (anyone know anyone who wants a couple miss treated birds- that’s for another tread) well there is this one Amazon that I was told is very aggressive (when I know if he had some better conditions he would come out of it) I just don’t think she could handle it.
:(

First off get her a Grey, that way when it gives the dinosaur scream, or the bite, that we know is just waiting to happen, she will give it you you. :D

I'll take them birdies, oh if only I lived closer, I'm a sucker for a bird.

What would she make of a budgie, yep they do still bite, but not as hard as some, and yep they can be taught to talk, but as with all birds there's no guarantees. Or a Bourkes parakeet, not usually known to talk but can take anything. In all the time I've had my bourkes I've never been bitten once, not even when they are frightened. They don't like a lot of toys, but love ropes they can sit on and chew. :D

My reccomendation a quaker parrot because they have a really high talking rate and aren't as big as a grey. If you get one from a breeder some will allready be talking and they are relativly in expensive. Although loud at times hey don't have the total jungle call of a larger parrot. they are a good inbetween from cockatiel to a larger parrot. Can be cage aggressive but if she opened the door and let him come out on his own he should be fine. Here they run between 125-175 from a breeder for a green one and a little more for a blue one they also come in a brilliant yellow but then we are talking the thousands! So that's my official reccomenation - of course there al always jenday conures.....

An aggressive Amazon? ppssshhh, I don't believe you, lol. Yea, I would think a tiel would be the best, but I guess I don't have the knowledge and experience of the rest of you on this forum...But if she DOES want an aggressive Amazon, I happen to know one very well...;)

Eh, get her a Hy, good talkers, wonderful cuddlers, and they have a really good teaching technique, if it doesn't like something you do to it, I can GAURENTEE THAT YOU'LL ONLY DO IT ONCE!! :18: :18:

Seriously though - what about our favorite around here, sennies? I mean, really might just work out well?

Oh I'll take that Hy, when it doesn't work out,

Yeah a Sennie, they are wonderful. I'll have that one as well if ever she wanted to find it a new home. :D :D

Thats so funny, but so very true.

Give me a minute, I'm sure there must be a bird I wouldn't take ..................................................... Okay your right there is no bird I wouldn't take. :D

What about a Red-Bellied Parrot or a Caique? They're smaller and playful. Plus I'm pretty sure Red-Bellied's can learn a few words

Ringnecks are beautiful birds, I had one a few years back, and when he passed I couldn't face getting another, don't think there could be two as sweet and loving as he was.

All your suggestions are really good birds. Although fro a beginner i would not go with a amazon lol.

I was thinking maybe a parrotlet or indian ringneck. Both are capable to talk. i thin the ringneck are easier to teach to talk but i could be wrong.

Redbellies and sennies are also good birds. Bothare capable to talk. The breeder where i got my tiels from also had a pair of redbellies and babies that were really young and cute.. one of her redbellies talked... not sure about the otehr one though.

i think ringnecks are better talkers though.

In all seriousness, although Ringnecks are beautiful birds, not sure its really a first bird, I know with mine it could be a stubborn little devil. Think I would go for the more laid back kinda bird as a first time bird.

OH!! I you guys will have to disreguard my first suggestion, I didn't realize that we were talking about a beginer here ... in that case I think you should get her a Hyacinth Macaw ... they are great birds! :18:

cockatiels are the very best beginner birds out there but not much good at talking and alot of adults consider them childrens birds. As I mentioned early a quaker would be a great choice if talking is an issue or have you thought about a GCC - they can learn to talk but are generally quieter and although slithly nippy they have snmaller beaks.

Do you know how expensive hyacinths are?!?!?!?!?!?!... I doubt that many people have $10,000(U.S.) to spend on a bird alone.

Ya i've heard a few thing about ringnecks.. i heard they can get wild once they hit like maturity or something like that.

I think a parrotlet. They are capable of talking, a lot of people describe them as an amazon in little birds body. also they can cuddle. There like an amazon in a love bird body. My friend use to have one.. it was awesome...oh and they can live up to like 20-30 years. Although my friends only lasted a month... hmmm. They also come in all sorts of colours (not that thats an issue but just pointing it out lol) and they are fairly inexpensive.. i know where i live you can get a one for about $150(blue or green) depending on the mutation.. .. white and other fancy colours are a little more usually.

I could get one for $8500 .... what about it Christy ... can we spend that ... we don't need groceries, rent, power/cable, for the next year ... let's get a Hy! :57: :25:

I never had that problem but then I had him out all the time, playing and all sorts, he could be a right handfull at times though. (I call it character :D )

He used to sing the "Bad Boys" song, it was really funny. :D
