Green Cheek Conure
Hello, im a new Green Cheek Conure owner and wanted to make myself known. I bought this little guy 3 days ago and its been very good so far, hes 3 months old and is such a calm and quiet bird he lets me pet him everywhere but im not sure if he really enjoys it. He take treats from me and steps up on my hand but always jumps out before i can get him out the cage. A worry of mine is that he is bored, he has many toys in his cage but never plays with them. Literally all he does in that cage is eat and sit on a perch. This is probably because hes still settling in but i just want to make sure this is normal behavior. I was looking for some tips on how i can make him want to come out of his cage more because i have a playgym in my room i want him to use. Other than that its nice meeting you all :)

Welcome! Adorable baby.

It definitely sounds like still settling in behavior. It's instictive for them to be very still and observant in new surroundings, in the wild they would do this to assess for predators.

My GCC did this for about 10 days straight, then in the blink of an eye turned into the playful clown that they're known for.

Is this your first parrot? You're going to fall madly in love, and have so much fun.

I agree with CherylCali in that you're going to fall madly in love and have so much fun! Congrats on your gcc & welcome to the group.

Good to hear, cant wait till he becomes playful. This is my second bird, i had a
cockatiel before and he was an explorer the minute i brought him home which
was why i was concerned about my GCC's behaviour.
I've now got him on the playgym and he still just sitting on the highest perch,
hopefully him being so close to me now will make him bond quicker with me.

My GCC is the only bird that I've had do the sit still for a week routine. Very interesting.

Congratulations! Your 3 month old conure is better behaved than my 3 decade old.
Glad you found us.

Don't force your new green cheek out of his/her cage if you don't have to.

It may be easier to open up the cage, put some treats around the outside of the cage and sit near the cage (as long as he's comfortable with you being close) and allow him to choose to come out. When he's out, offer him treats.

If he's not playing with his toys, try stuffing treats in his toys to get him interested in them. If he touches the toys or plays with them at all, make a big deal about it! Good bird! What a good bird! You like your toy? Is that a good toy? That kind of thing.

So cute! I like how he has a lot of green on his head it reminds me of my black capped.

It's so crazy how different these birds can be even out of the same clutch you will see birds with different personality. Yours sounds shy and sweet. Give his time he will come out of his shell. Don't force him but talk to him sit with him and let him get to know you. Once the trust is built up you will have a little buddy for life.

Congrats and I hope go see more as he grows.

How is this bird doing? I was searching for other pyrrhura conures and I found the souance conure aka maroon-tailed conure. It looks just like your little guy.
