Cody-Blu, female Blue-Crowned Conure, Hatched - (approx) June 1, 2014, in a South Florida tree.

Pritti (Cherry-Head Conure) -- Fly in Peace my beautiful boy. Forever I'll love you.
It is when people say they have to "get rid of" a pet.

Would they say that about a child or about grandma?

No, but people do abandon their children and grandmothers. I fully understand your exasperation with those types, but we are a society that holds sentient beings as chattel property and given our propensity for impulse buying, I doubt there will be a decided change in the generation following.....heck, why do many people want a parrot, for the companionship or for a conversation piece, or maybe because the bird talks, or maybe it gives you a macho image, because of their intelligence or because their care provides you with a rewarding experience.....far too many people obtain companion birds because of the first two reasons.....

I've always hated that expression also. And having been in Animal Welfare & Rescue, I heard that a lot, and even worse ways of putting it. But, like Weco said, this is how our modern society thinks about animals.

I was watching a "reality" tv show about a guy that helps people with their cats when they aren't all getting along. So many times, I see these "cat people" (not the guy that helps) saying things like -- if we can't get kitty to stop this/or/that, we'll have to get rid of him, or when the cat guy helps and teaches them how to solve the problem the owners created, they say things like, i'm really glad i didn't have to get rid of kitty.

CAN THEY HEAR THEMSELVES????? These people that think they are catlovers !!!!

Or worse...the ones who say things like: "We need to rehome this bird, which we have had for 12 years, because just last week we got a puppy - it's so cute, cuddly and affectionate & we just love it to bits. Anyway the new puppy is taking up all of our time so we really don't have time to care for the bird properly anymore."

SO wrong, on SO many levels.

I could never see myself "getting rid of" any of my birds or my cats. I (I like to say) rehomed my one cat. He wasn't getting along with my other cats. He was peeing on things and constantly fighting with the others. I found him a good home with my aunt. She was a lonely old lady and he was a perfect cat for her. He's spoiled to bits and definitely had the personality that needed to live in a one cat household. Somebody "getting rid" of their bird is the reason I have my Dusky. His wife was pregnant and apparently new baby=get rid of the bird according to this guy's wife. He wanted to keep Kayak, but his wife would hear nothing of it. His loss, my gain!

I like this picture. It floated around on a bunch of pages on Facebook for the longest time. It says it perfectly. I understand sometimes things don't work out and people are forced to give up their pets, but more often than not, it seems that people don't care and just dump them when they're bored of them or they're too big or too old or they developed a behavior issue that they don't want to work on.

I'm curious to know what that show was....

But some of the reasons people give pets up really are ridiculous.
