Hello,
I was happy to come across this forum for starting my research on parrots. I've been interested in birds for nearly my entire life and now as I am about to finish grad school I think it could be the time.

Growing up my dad was a falconer, so we have cared for various red tails, harris hawks, kestrels, etc. Currently I am an avid salt water aquarist, fig grower, ham radio operator (hence my usual user name- its my call sign), runner. My wife and I are the guardians of two rescue boarder collie/lab mixes.

Looking forward to learning in the forums and seeing if a parrot may be right for us.

Any book recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome! This is a great place to start :).

It must have been interesting growing up with a falconer and watching your dad with the various species. I too was a saltwater aquarist for some time. I'd love to pick it up again some day, but I'd have to join a forum, I am sure things have changed and evolved.

Take a look into the various species sections (as well as other sections) here, and you'll find some interesting information from 'real' owners, not just articles telling you generalizations.

Glad you found us! Stick around :) this is a great forum to learn about parrots!

Nice to meet ya! Your hobbies are really neat, I would love to someday own a saltwater aquarium :)

I have only have experience with budgies (the common little parakeets you see in pet stores) and a White Capped Pionus! Both are great birds.

Budgies are little balls of energy, depending on temperament I suppose... Any budgie that I've ever had has been full of life! They are underestimated a lot of the time, however they are quite intelligent! My Juniper knows a few phrases and tricks, and loves to spend time on my shoulder and fly around the house. They are great companion birds if you have time to spend with them, or can be kept in a small/large flock and are just as wonderful!

My girlfriend's White-Capped Pionus is a very calm one. He is not very vocal (or loud) for the most part, which seems to be common among the species. They are a bit larger than budgies, but still small compared to the larger birds. Oliver (the pionus) is a very smart bird, loves to explore new fruits and vegetables, and snack on sunflower seeds when we train him! He has a bit of an attachment to my girlfriend and will follow her around the house on the ground, scurrying along. They seem to be lovely companion birds as well, from my personal experience. Very intelligent and quirky little birds :D

Hope I helped guide you some! There are many different kinds of birds and personalities that are so individual. It depends on what size you want, how much time you'll have, how much space you have, and the temperament you're looking for, among many other things!

Welcome! That is so cool, your dad being a falconer!!! Look around, shake down the brains around here, and I am sure you'll find the perfect type of parrot for you!
