50+ years with parakeet experience and last 10 years with parrotlets. Currently have parrotlet born approx 2010.
New member here -- I have a parrotlet who makes what I describe as a growling sound. I just consider it a part of his language and routine of sounds, as there is no physical aggression associated with the growling. I recently posted on Facebook a short video clip of him in his "happy place" -- an empty vitamin jar! In between the chirps you may be able to hear what I'd describe as the growling-like sounds. Hope you can see it!

I am not familiar with parrotlets, but wonder if the noise is related to nesting behavior, given the location inside enclosure?

Nice video and bird. Think Scott is on right track. jh

For clarity, I was not posing a question but was originally replying to another member who asked about their bird's growling. The moderator decided to move my response into the P'let Forum as a new thread/topic, a good idea. My parrotlet actually makes this sound ALL the time, almost like a nervous tic. So, I just consider it a part of his "language".

A BFA I had(RIP) would growl all the time too. I bought her on consignment from the parrot shop I had worked at, and her constant growling had everyone thinking she was a big scary mean bird, when in fact she was one of the sweetest birds I've ever known. As far as it being a nesting thing, maybe? But she was quite an old gal and would do it CONSTANTLY, not just when around what could be considered a "nest".

Shrug, birds are weird. :D
