With so many hydrophobic coatings available these days, has anyone come up with a solution for the bottom grate of our cages? Bird poop is seriously gross and this would help it not stick.

I use coconut oil. I warm a bit of it to liquid form and use a paper towel to wipe it all over the bottom grate. It makes a HUGE difference when cleaning the grate, poop and food slip right off. At first I didn't think it helped too much and got lazy and skipped that step and I ended up regretting it.

Good idea I'll have to try it

I have used coconut oil in place of corn oil when I was not going to clean a surface (non-parrot) for a few weeks. As you know, corn oil will go rancid quickly. Never tested coconut oil for longer time periods.

I use the same brush as Kiwi for the daily brush off before I change the paper. When the grate is oiled, this makes it look very clean every day.

I've never had the coconut oil go rancid, not once. I do a deep clean every week to 10 days (remove from the cage, scrub with Poop-Off cleaner, steam to remove cleanser residue and re-oil the bars before putting back into the cage). I like that the oil makes the poop and food slip off the grate and not cling and harden as much as when I skip it. There are some spots where it will be a little crusty - like right under where he sleeps at night - but for the most part the coconut oil causes most of the mess to slip off and be removed with the nightly paper change.

Try Poop Off (I order mine on Doctors Fosters and Smith). It's unbelievable how easily it wipes off! I love the easy wipes, but also buy the bottle and spray on a paper towel and wipe down each week. Seriously, takes it right off with just a few swipes! And it's non-toxic. I promise you'll love it! And very affordable!

Be careful when adding any oils to the grates....I tried this once with coconut oil and of course my galah decided to roam about the bottom of her cage and must've done something like roll over because she ended up with oil spots all over her lol
