I told my sister that if your pet bird doesn't poop on you then you're not loved. Naturally this added fuel to my sister is crazy thinking.

both are the loves of my life
Oh @Rody, such lovely photos, thank you for submitting them!! Would you like to nominate this one as your "official" entry??

I'm thankful for Pilot, she has always been here when I needed someone, and although she is standoff-ish at times, shes an amazing bird and has really come a long way in these last few months, and she has even helped me realize some things about myself. Even the small moments like her sitting in my hood, to her preening my nose or playing with my earrings, she seriously brightens my day and I am so glad that our paths aligned, and I really hope that I'm a good bird parent to her, and honestly I think this photo of me and her will always be one of my favorites because we were both being silly. I love you pilot and I cannot wait to continue to watch you grow and see your personality come out some more (official entry)

Awwwwwwwww I love this pic of the two of you @Cali&Pilot. Some folks don't believe that birds are capable of the kind of empathy that they have but they are totally wrong about that, and those of us here who love birds know much better. Thank you for your entry, I love it! 💖

Thank you, and yeah shes pretty sweet, if I am upset and I take her out of her cage, she will go crawl up onto my head which ultimately makes me laugh, shes really silly too, she was watching bluey on my computer for over an hour last night while I was doing school work, I remember when I first was talking to my grandparents about getting a budgie, I joined a budgie forum, and they were pretty much saying that I was too young to have a bird and that I didn't know what I was doing, and that since I'm only 17 that I'm not gonna be a good bird parent, so I stopped going on there and they were completely wrong, because me and pilot have learned each other and worked at our own paces, and depending on the day she either wont leave my side and will follow me or other days she will do her own thing and come over to check on me and fly back to her spot. The people on the budgie forum were wrong, because she seems to be doing well and enjoying being here, and she really has come a long way, from a scared budgie that would freak out when anyone came near her cage and wanted absolutely nothing to do with me, to hopping onto my shoulder, or preening my neck. In 9 short months, I will forever be grateful for her, they were right about one thing though, I didn't know what I was doing, at times I still don't but I have and still am learning

It’s an easy (and typically appropriate) answer to try to deter very young people from getting parrots as pets. I even try to deter not very young people from buying parrots. They really don’t make good pets for the majority of people, and then the poor things get rehomed and bounced around for a good part of their lives. Then, there’s “us,” the exception to the rule. “Bird people” know how difficult, messy, loud, frustrating, and expensive they are, but it’s worth it to us, as we also know what incredible companions they can be.

My first bird was a little budgie that my mom bought for me when I was three. I most certainly wouldn’t advocate for anyone buying a pet for a kid that young, but I adored that little bird his entire life. He and I grew up and spent a lot of time together, all the way until he passed away in my hands when he was 13, and I was 16. Things were different then, and we didn’t really know how to properly care for a parrot, give him the proper diet, etc., but the most important thing is that he knew what love and companionship was his entire life. Enjoy little Pilot. It’s evident how much you care about her.

@nkrbkr That story about your childhood budgie is both cute and sad.
One thing that I've learned from the various animals that I've lived with and helped raise from dogs, cats, rabbits, snakes, guinea pigs, chinchillas, cows, horses, hedgehogs, and more (I've lived with a lot of people, that had a bunch of animals) is that every animal requires differant things, and you have to really want to do what is best for them, for example, when I got my first rabbit at 13, I had done little to no research and she was very stubborn, but I loved her none the less, with the hedgehog we had, I would feed him mealworms out of my hand and when he'd bite me because I still smelled like one, yeah it hurt but I knew that they had bad eyesight. I love animals, and always have, and with a lot of people and the animals they get, they don't do their research and they expect their pet to be a specific way because that's how people make it seem online, but in my opinion with any animal its about the small victories, when I moved in with my maternal grandmother, she had a blue and gold macaw named DJ, and I loved that bird, he was 17 at the time and would be 21 now, and I would always make sure he had food and stuff because no one else really did anything with him, he was in a small cage and they refused to let him out and was agressive due to that fact and because not alot of the people in that house paid him any attention. So for about 30 minutes a day I'd sit next to him and talk to him and give him peanuts and things like that, I loved that bird, and slowly he would let me touch him and he was learning to say my name. I don't think my maternal grandmother did reasearch before getting him and that is the reason why I always make it known to people asking me advice on getting a pet I tell them over and over that they need to do every bit of reasearch that they can because if they cant give that animal what they need than they don't deserve them at all, with pilot there are still things that I am unsure about but that's why I come here for advice.
I firmly believe that anyone getting an animal should do reasearch before getting an animal, due to the things Ive seen, and honestly I wish I could go back and get DJ but I'm not able to have him here, and what makes me mad is that I know that they still have him, and they also got two other birds after I left, but my point is that it infuriates me when people don't do their reasearch before getting a pet that they haven't had before, and in the end, that's why so many pets get rehomed. I just wish there were more people that genuinely cared about animals the way that I and other people do.
