Odd Quaker noises

My daughter's parrot makes weird noises quite often...sometimes he/she makes what I think of as a high-pitched velociraptor sound, and other times it's a low-pitched "farting" noise. It's unlike any bird calls I've heard before. Is this normal?

Given that I probably wasn't interested in birds during the Jurassic Era, I really have no idea which of your birds you might be referring to, since they are all parrots and their noises could be almost anything.....

Since I posted this under the species specific topic of "Quaker Parrot", I kind of assumed that people would realize what bird I was talking about. I also assume that you haven't seen any of the Jurassic Park movies. Thanks anyway.

Tuukee makes a lot of different sounds- i love them all even when they are all in my ears- but he's been exploring more since he's trying to talk. you'll hear them make all new types of sounds and stop hearing any of the ones that were once so familiar. he doesnt make a happy dolphin sound as much anymore and that was one of his favs and how he tells me he wants something. but yea- he makes some high pitched ear splitting sounds but yea i know what sound your familiar with- he/she could be telling you to c'mer bc Tuukee does that to me and it means pick me up now! lol so see what mood your parrot is in when he/she is making that sound- he/she could want food... your food... lol

weco, the subject of my post was "Odd Quaker noises". I'm not sure how much more obvious I could have been.

I don't want to get off on the wrong foot with you, since I don't even know you, but I'm not sure why my fairly innocuous question garnered such a rude reply from you. If that wasn't your intention, then I apologize for my sharpness to you in my follow up. If it was your intention, then please do us both a favor & ignore my postings in the future.

While you're waiting for all those strange Quaker sounds to waft your way, you could learn tidbits from these and/or other internet links relevant to Quaker parrot sounds.....

I've found plenty of video/audio clips of Quakers *talking* and precious little of plain ol' random Quaker calls. All I wanted to know is if this was a normal sound, or if it was some strange noise he may have been imitating, perhaps learned before he came to us. My only reference for one of the noises he makes was from remembering how the velociraptors sounded in the Jurassic Park movies, so that was the example I used.

Excuse my ignorance for asking a question of the species specific section of ParrotForums.com...I didn't realize I had to have the answers before I even asked questions here. Maybe you could point me to a list of questions that are allowed to be asked...?

Ahh, yes, wild parrot sounds.....for those, forget all that stuff on youtube or other cutsey sites & take a look at the xeno-canto.org website & search for myiopsitta monachus sound clips, you will find a number of wild sounds for your Quaker/monk parakeet…..

Kiwi sounds like my Breezy. Quakers are so smart and quirky. Breezy makes all kinds of sounds that my other birds do not make. Peace be to you.

After searching the database referenced by weco, I found his calls sound the most like the calls from Quaker parrots from the US. I guess he has an American accent.

cooper makes all kinds of noises. high and low pitched. i wouldnt get worried or anything. they have a noise for everything lol...

My #1 quaker never talked much, but loved making really juicy raspberries. And she would do what we called broadcast yiping. Her head would twitch in a circle, like one of those rainbird sprinklers, and each twitch had a yipe. What a racket, but hilarious to see.

Aubrey doesn't talk much either but makes some crazy 'courting' sounds to Lucky. Squeaks and peeps and chirps and birdy-robot sounds, all while hopping and dancing.

Lucky usually speaks English, but sometimes goes on a crazy rampage in quaker-talk.

I know this is several days old, but I am gonna answer anyway. In my experience, that's totally normal. My quaker Miles practices making sounds every day. It goes from cute little Chirp-chirp-chirp noises to horrible dinosaur screeching sounds (they DO sound like velociraptors sometimes!) *lol* Murray will go so far some days as to make every horrible sound in his lexicon (which is quite extensive; they love alarms, buzzes, clicks, and screeches), pause, say "Be good! Be good! Be good!" and then go back to making gawdawful noises. *lmao* If it weren't so hilarious that I was being mocked by a five inch tall bird, I would probably be annoyed. But yeah, expect that if a quaker hears a horrible noise (like a dying Goblin screech in Oblivion) they will make it back SO MUCH. They are pesky little birds.

My quaker has started making some weird noises also. Just out of the blue she'll place one leg higher than the other, will put her head down and make what sounds like an evil laugh. Sometimes she'll do this several times in a row, and other times she'll just do it for a split second and stop. She's never aggressive when she does it. Actually, she reserves her more typical laughing sound for when she's planning to bite someone, like my wife, the kids, or some other object that has caught her rage for the moment. She's only 5 or 6 months old, so I'm not sure if it's a mating thing or not. And while I'm at it, I'm not even sure that she's a female.
