I don't think that is too deep-- others may have different opinions--
I prefer something that is deep and a bit wider (with a 3" deep bowl, you probably shouldn't fill it up to the very top--that would just be a waste of food) As long as you position his perch at the proper height in relation to the bowl (to account for his size) I don't see why it would be an issue...FYI, mine are 4" across (not super wide, but wide enough that they can see what's in there to some extent without throwing everything out). I have a cup for wet food, dry food and water...I also have a bunch of extras in case I have to switch one out and don't have time to wash it before placing a new one in.
You could possibly use that shallow one for a fruit/veg tray....It might allow him to see what his options are a little better. In a deep tray (when it comes to fruit/veg), Noodles will toss out what she doesn't want to get to the better stuff on the bottom, so you might actually keep that and try it for fruit/veg (maybe see what others say).
