Opinions on this food bowl?

So I bought this stainless steel bowl online and despite knowing the measurements beforehand, it still came out looking a lot smaller than I expected. Funny how that works :34: anyway does anyone have opinions on whether this will be big enough to serve as a food dish for a greenwing?

It could hold enough food (in theory) but my concern is the shallowness/ shortness of the edges and how much food will likely be wasted because of that. Sure, all birds waste a ton of food, but that one looks like it would make it very easy to just push food right over the edge if digging for a favorite type of pellet or just wanting to hear the clank of the food hitting the ground lol. Plus, it's really long, so standing on a perch and eating from it could be awkward because reaching the edges could be a challenge and it would be hard to stand on for a bird that size.

How does it even mount to the cage?
If it can't be mounted, that's likely also going to be a problem.

Actually I got this one for the ease of mounting. Since my cage can't accommodate the typical mounting options due to a lack of bars, this one works nicely. It comes with 2 powerful magnets permanently attached to the bottom. So I'm thinking L bracket bolted to the stone tiles with the magnets sticking to it. Pretty sure she wouldn't be able to lift it. It's pretty strong. But it would make for easy pop on and off cleaning. I preferred the longer narrower type because I was thinking of placing it length-wise on the wall.

Your point about the depth confirmed my concern that much of the food will end up being pushed off. What do you think would be an ideal depth?

Let me look at mine
Mine are about 2.5" tall and those work fine for my cockatoo, but you could go a little deeper if you wanted without issue. I probably would avoid anything shallower because they like to shovel lol.

Good to know. I have 3 inch bowls also but I thought they might be too deep. Thanks for the advice!

I don't think that is too deep-- others may have different opinions--

I prefer something that is deep and a bit wider (with a 3" deep bowl, you probably shouldn't fill it up to the very top--that would just be a waste of food) As long as you position his perch at the proper height in relation to the bowl (to account for his size) I don't see why it would be an issue...FYI, mine are 4" across (not super wide, but wide enough that they can see what's in there to some extent without throwing everything out). I have a cup for wet food, dry food and water...I also have a bunch of extras in case I have to switch one out and don't have time to wash it before placing a new one in.

You could possibly use that shallow one for a fruit/veg tray....It might allow him to see what his options are a little better. In a deep tray (when it comes to fruit/veg), Noodles will toss out what she doesn't want to get to the better stuff on the bottom, so you might actually keep that and try it for fruit/veg (maybe see what others say).

Looks too small to me. Unconventional shape with narrowness may promote food wasting as macaws love to use their beaks to "sweep" items. A technique to uncover what they crave!

That's what I thought too-- glad you provided another opinion because I was worried I would be the only one! Always helps if you aren't alone lol!

Definitely not deep enough for Macaws or even medium sized birds. Also anything that is not latched down with some amount of pressure will just be thrown to the floor.


The ones that came with my cage are "latched" so they are impossible to lift and throw while the doors are closed.


I also use these, there's enough pressure to hold them down so that my macaw isn't interested in trying to chuck them.

It's a strong magnetic latch, but I do agree that it is too shallow.

Remember, with so much open space, you have several options for food bowls! That tree stand can easily accommodate several! Find a nice sized SS bowl! To mount it, use a properly sized piece of PVC, or end cap! You mount the PVC and it becomes the holder for your food bowls!
Side thought.
With all that height, you can put a great cargo net in there!
