Pixel: female senegal, hatched Dec 15, 2011
I'm going on an eight hour road trip tomorrow to visit friends for four days. Very excited. But...

This will be the first time I've left Pixel alone with someone just dropping by the house to feed her (previously I've had roommates who took care of her/relatives she stayed with for a weekend if I went away).

And I do trust my friends who are caring for her; both have had/do have birds...

But I'm honestly just TERRIFIED to just leave her all alone. At my house. And I keep imagine all these ridiculous worst case scenarios...

Fellow paranoid parrot people, someone console me :(. Or, you know, send a horse-tranquilizer laced cupcake my way :54:

omg lol, i know how you feel. i recently did this but it was only for 2 days. due to my love for my fids i dont have much of a life (that and i have a bad back that leaves me in severe pain) but my bf spent a fortune on fancybcamping rquipment for my birthday to get me outta the house for my bday to try have fun, but we were only an hr away from home.
this next part may make you feel a little uneasy, but im only telling you on a side of caution.

before we left on the thursday night i filled up the pellets, gave them a tray of seed buried in grass for them to forage thru and made a heap of new toys in order to keep them occupied. i gave them their dinner of fresh food and locked them away. I organised for a friend of mine to come round and feed them/ change their water(had pre prepared the fresh food) along with my cat.
Well he rocked up around lunch time to do the chores. i check my phone around 3pm (limited service and limited battery), i had a voice mail asking if the birds were meant to be out? i freaked, then thought nah, he pullung a nasty prank on me. i rang him back as bf packed all the fishing gear back into car. i rang my mate and he assured me he wasnt pranking me.... omg i freaked out severly. i had uncreened windows open (my version of a cat door) a cat free to enter at will.
with my advise he got them all back in the cage and wired all the doors shut. it turns out prince (im assuming cause he is to smart) had opened the side door on the cage. we dont know how long they had been out, but i know due to wall damage they were hanging off an open unscreened window. i thank my lucky stars every time i look at them now more then ever and i wont leave the house unles i have secured tge cage doors with padlicks.

so please, be sure your house and cage is secure. it had not occured to me that they would open the cage as i have never had a problem
Dont mean to alarm you, but our fuds are too smart for their own good sometimes and i woukdnt want anything to hapen to your precious companion

Oh my! That must have been traumatizing! Thank goodness all your birds were okay.

Pixel has never escaped/tried to escape her cage. It's got fairly bird proof locks. I also will have all the windows closed, and I'm in the habit of unplugging everything in my house (tv, toaster, etc, etc) when I'm not using it. No poisonous plants. Toilet seat is always down. Worst case scenario if she got out and had herself a little adventure, I'd just have a lot of, umm, custom "redesigned" pieces around the house.

I'm with you on the paranoid path. When we had to leave my fids (and dogs) for 3 days and 2 nights, I had a stay-at-home petsitter (my son's GF). There was an extensive DO and DO NOT DO list firmly attached to the fridge, along with my avian and regular vet's phone numbers, and phone numbers of friends of mine who have birds, too.

I was a nervoes nelly the entire time, but Nikki (the sitter) called me twice a day with updates. :)

There were no issues, and we all survived, even though my big macs were a wee bit upset with me when I returned home. :54:

I'm right there with you!!! We keep talking about going on vacation, but I fear Jackie would hate me for abandoning him for even ONE day...occasionally I go to work with hubby and sometimes it's all day, and I get yelled at and the evil eyes when I get home :( I told him we'd just have to take Jackie with us lol

I'm glad I'm not alone!

Arg, I can't believe it though. It was absolutely POURING rain the first half of my drive, had to go 20 km below to speed limit to avoid my car hydroplaning and careening in to a ditch. Well. I missed a washout on the highway by an hour, and a mudslide later on by two hours. So now the highway is closed (there was a detour... But it washed out. Figures). I'm praying the rain lets up so I can go home the day I'd planned. :11:

But Half, just think of these new experiences you're having, compared to an otherwise mundane drive you might have had ! ! !

Enjoy & good luck.....
