Hi everyone. I’m curious if you have any parrot book recommendations? They could be an informative resource, or just a beautiful coffee table type book. After @LaManuka posted the Australian parrot poster in another thread yesterday, I pulled out this beautiful book that I found at a tiny bookstore in Australia last year. It was on sale, & looked like it had been there for some time. After getting back to my Airbnb, I looked it up and found that it is actually an out of print book that is difficult to find. It’s full of beautiful art plates of parrots, & one of the best souvenirs I’ve ever brought home. I’d post some pictures of some of the plates, but not sure if that would be a copyright thing? Anyway, I’d love to hear if you have any recommendations. 😊

Wow, @nkrbkr, what a jewel of a find you made at that book shop, I'm seeing copies of it for sale online at around the $600 to $700 USD mark!! I haven't bought a bird book in a while, but the last one I got was "Birds Of The Photo Ark", released through National Geographic. And when my hubby and I first got together way back sometime last century, we discovered we both had a copy of "Every Australian Bird Illustrated" - guess some things were just meant to be, huh? ;)

Thank you, I’ll look those up! Must be a good book, if you both had it. 😊 Yes, such a score! I bought that book for I think 35 AUD! 🤯

Clearly that book shop didn't know what a rare gem they had. Bargain of the century right there!!!

I have tons of bird book recommendations! Most of them aren't specifically parrot-related, but they're all great regardless:
-Alex & Me (Irene Pepperberg)
-Of Parrots and People (Mira Tweti)
-Birding Without Borders (Noah Strycker)
-Among Penguins (Noah Strycker)
-The Thing With Feathers (Noah Strycker)
-What It's Like to be a Bird (David Allen Sibley)
-H is for Hawk (Helen Macdonald)
-How To Know The Birds (Ted Floyd)

If I think of more, I'll update this list :)

Check out public libraries. A few have bargain basements. They are getting rid of books as they go digital. I've found several beading, crochet, favorite novels and bird books. Most are out of print.

Is there an illustration of a varied lorikeet or a princess parrot in there - I'd love to see it
There is!

And here’s an illustration from my previously mentioned book that I found in Australia.

You’re welcome! Out of curiosity, are the little yellow stripeys on Lovejoy individual feathers, or they a stripe within a feather (I hope that makes sense)? It’s so unique, & so hard to tell from pictures & illustrations.

The central shaft of his feathers are yellow, and the yellow extends just a tiny bit beyond into the feather as well. Hawkhead parrots have it around their heads too but in white, and Goldie's lorikeets have it almost in a mirror image to Lovejoy, they have green streaks over yellow feathers. I'd love a Goldie's but it would have to be another rooster cos Lovejoy would probably try to make me a grandmother (again!!) if I had a hen. Their babies would be gorgeous though!!

That’s very neat. Birds really are amazing.

I have a good information book. I THINK it's called Parrots of the World by Rosemary Law. Not sure where i put it when I moved...

Thank you! I looked it up, & don’t see one with that title. Is it one of these, perhaps?

The Complete Book of Parrots. It had a lot of breeding information on the species. I found it quite informative.

I'm also looking for a good general book and a good book on parrot training. A lot of the books that I'm seeing are either very specific for breed or are kind of dated. I don't want to read or intake any antiquated information although some of those older books do look promising. I'm so unsure of which ones to start with.

With the saturation of on line traing geared for 'subscriptions' thats going to be difficult. It's becoming difficult to find books these days. Then search thrift stores, bargain book stores, public library bargain basements, and the like. Some even advertise online.

How do people feel about the "Parrot Wizards Guide to Well Behaved Parrots?" I've watched some of his training videos online, seems like he knows what he's doing even if the book appears a bit overpriced, lol. But then again, what isn't overpriced these days?
