Parting with Vinny the Vinaceous Breasted Amazon Parrot

Because pets are prohibited in new rental, we are looking to sell Vinny and his cage. He is 7 years old and very tame. How do I go about putting a price tag on him?

Where you are located has much to do with the value one would place on a rarely seen Amazon in the Companion Parrot trade. Vinaceous also know as Vinaceous-Breasted Amazons are CITES Class I, which means that in many parts of this World, they cannot be easily moved between Countries without extensive documentation as they are classified as endangered.

It is very interesting that a Parrot you have had for 6+ years would not have you searching for a Rental that does not have such a requirement. In all honesty, many have found that the term 'Pets' does not always apply to birds. Have you completed a search for an apartment that does allow 'Pets'?

Vinaceous Amazons are on the mid-smaller side common with weights in the 365 to 385 gram range.

The size of the cage can add value or not depending of the cage's condition and age.

So, more information is needed.

Vianceous breasted Amazons are such beautiful birds, must be difficult for you to part with him. Also they are endangered, so perhaps a well maintained Zoo could be willing to purchase him and also could be a long term home.

We are located in central Florida and the cage is very sturdy and self standing (wheels).

Have you considered contacting the breeder or place of purchase by any chance? (in case they are still around)


Just thinking in terms of them being rare, and if he could be a breeder bird, it might be a good idea to try getting him into a breeding program.



If he wouldn't make a good breeder, or you don't want him to be one, that's fine too. As for price... well, that's tough. A lot of people may be interested in having a rare and unique bird just to have it where-as others may only care about the bird itself, regardless of what that bird is. In other words, they don't care about any status symbol.

That is sad but true! That is the reason why this species as also the Spix's Macaw, Blue throated Macaw, Philippine Cockatoo etc are in such a perilous state.

I'm a bit perplexed you would rather just abandon your pet than refuse the rental. You can simply find somewhere else to move to, if you really care then you would do whatever to keep your pet. Not sure about others but personally to make me part with any of my pets they would have to be pried from my cold, dead hands

I'm not aware that Florida has a State Law regarding Renting and Pets. Yes, some 'new' rental buildings may have a band of Pets, but not all rental buildings either new or existing. A wider search will solve this problem.

It would be unacceptable for us to accept separating from our Amazon and would not stop until a suitable place was found for all of us.

I also agree you should take him with you, but if that just is not an option, I would avoid selling to anyone who has no experience with birds. If the price is too low, you'll get buyers that see a good price and will jump on it without knowing what they are getting into. I'm afraid your beloved pet will just be passed around for profit. If you ask just the right price, you'll be able to find someone that wants a companion, will give a good life to this bird and hopefully will no longer need to be rehomed ever again. Poor amazon, probably feeling abandoned eh?

I too am very perplexed that you would rehome such a rare and what you call "sweet" bird that you've had for over 6 years, simply because the apartment/house you are looking to rent doesn't allow pets. I would live in my car with my birds until I found an appropriate rental that allowed them to move in with me, rather than just sell them and take a rental that doesn't allow them. I hope you can understand why we are apprehensive about the reason you're just letting him go...

If there is another reason that you are rehoming him, it's best that you just admit it, especially if it's a behavioral, medical/health, etc. reason. If you just need the money then that's fine, but it's best to be honest so that the person who buys your bird knows what they are getting into, otherwise he's just going to be passed from home to home, owner to owner, for years and years. Sadly, this is what often becomes of rehomed parrots, especially if not everything is disclosed about them before they are rehomed...

I'm also unclear as to why you sell him rather than look for a different rental? We turned down numerous rentals in the past that wouldn't allow our amazon and kept on looking until we found ones that would. In fact, when buying our condo, we had our realtor write it into our offer that the offer was contingent on approval by the HOA board to allow our parrot, as their board must approve every pet individually. We would have backed out of buying it had he not been approved and kept looking, hence including the clause in the offer. I sincerely hope you reconsider rehoming him and instead looking for a more pet friendly apartment.

But if, for whatever reason, you truly cannot keep him then please consider surrendering him to an avian rescue (so birds specific, not the local dog/cat shelter). Be sure it is a reputable nonprofit and not some bird hoarder/flipper. If you care about his future and want to see him go to a good home, turn him over to those who have the experience and ability to place him in the *right* home, one that will be much more likely to keep him for life than what you'll find just posting him up online for sale. You may also consider, given his rarity, donating him into a zoo breeding program where he will hopefully help with the continuation of his species

Exactly. Either a zoo or rescue would be best for Vinny, price and potential profits aside.

Please be careful with who ends up taking your bird. Please consider doing what is best for the creature you've shared your home with for the past 7 years rather than trying to find the most money you possibly can for him.
