I love pistachios and plan to get some for the first time sence I got Bob tomorrow. I was wondering if they (cooked, salted pistachios) would be safe for Bob?

You don't give your birds salt, excess salt is bad for them as it is with your other animals. Plus Cockatiels don't eat Pistachios. At least I've never seen one attempted....

Hmmm...I bought unsalted, roasted pistachio nuts and my 'tiels LOVED em! For a treat they thoroughly enjoyed them and loved playing with the shell pieces too. :)

I will not share the salted ones, but where can I get unsalted. I have never seen them, of course I haven't looked either.

We put unsalted pistacios (and just about any other kind of nut) in the treat mix for our birdies. While pistacios aren't their favorites, they like them for a change now and then.

I'm a sunflower seed eater who has had to stop since they're only good if they're roasted with salt. And I'm not giving my birdies even 1 of those delicious, salty, oh-so-bad-for-me-by-the-bag treats.

I don't know if Bob would like human sunflower seeds, he certainly doesn't like the bag of raw unsalted ones I got for him. I don't expect that I will ever find out if he likes ours as I almost never have them, and even if I did he would have to steal them from me which would be hard given the amount of suppervision he gets.

I guess mine are picky.... they eat just about anything else, meal worms, anything I eat they want some too, love bread, banana chips, etc...

I shop at an organic market and in their covered bins they sell all kinds of good, unsalted items for us. I purchase a bit of many unsalted nuts and other treats and give to birdies. I eat them also. Some of the nuts are raw like cashew and pistachio, almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds and unhulled sesame seeds which are very high in calcium. One other idea I just did was to put some blueberries, melons, and any other fruit I have around in a food processor. Then put the mix into an ice tray (fruit pops) and the birds love them semi frozen. They really teast good.

From what I read, Yes, parakeets can eat pistachios. Pistachios are high in protein, antioxidants, fibre and also low in calories.:D
