Rory ~ A male turquoise green cheek conure ~ Hatched 02-12-2013
Oh my gosh I need help!!!!! Some how I have accidentally potty trained my Rory! Now he wont go potty in his cage he waits till I get home to do it and some times that can be a couple of hours and I know it's not good for him to hold his potty!!! I don't even know how this happened. I just let him out every morning and set him on the kitchen floor so he can do his thing. I'm so worried that he is going to get sick because he is holding his potty till I get home. Please help me to untrain him.:smile040:

What if you just left him out to hang out on top? Just leave the door open? Or is that not possible?

He's out if I am home, but we have dogs so I can not let him just roam the house all day while I'm gone. Plus he's the only bird I know that likes to run around on the ground, I swear he thinks he's a dog.

A lot of birds don't like soiling their cages if they can avoid it. There's a good chance he's sleeping till you get home and wakes and does his potty when you let him out. My amazon is like this, but when he has to go he will in his cage too.

I'm only worried because he use to potty in his cage and my husband get's home before me so I know he doesn't sleep then. But my hubby wont let him out.

You are going to have to let him out all day long and confine the dogs to another room until he learns to go everywhere (as all birds should do). He is too small to hold his poop for so many hours, it's not good for them.

Unfortunately there is no option to let him just roam all day I might have to make him his own room or something if that the only way to help him. I'm just worried that he will chew on some power cords he loves power cords or get into something that can hurt him. He will no just stay on his cage I let him have free roam when I'm home and he loves to run around on the ground. There has to be a different option.

No you can't leave a bird unattended.

What you can do is when you are home with him, get him used to pooping on a paper towel. Then move the paper towel randomly everywhere and ask him to poop on it. It's easier to do this with the first morning poop. So not just on the kitchen floor. Everyday when you leave, put the paper towel in his cage.

But don't fret too much, my Grey tends to do this as well, but she'll eventually poop in her cage if I'm gone too long.

Thank you! I was gone for 10 hours yesterday and he didn't poop!!! So I will have to try the paper towel thing although he likes so sit on the ground and runs around before he poops. I have a really weird bird. I just want him to be happy and healthy. I know he's happy lol!!!

Here is an update I took him to the Vet today because I am super over protective we had a poop test done I will get the results tomorrow he has gain two grams sense his last visit and the Vet said he looked great and told me I was probably over reacting but that's ok better safe then sorry. My husband and I went out on a date and when we got home he had pooped in his cage like a good boy lets hope he keeps it up. Thanks for all the advice.

He will, its nature. Better over protective than not aware.
you guys will be fine.

Vet Update!!
My vet probably thinks I'm crazy lol, I even started crying when he came in!! (oh my gosh that was embarrassing!!!!) He did a poop test or whatever it's called and he said Rory is perfectly healthy he has gain two grams sense his last vet visit!!! YAY!!! But he is still holding it :( I have figured out that maybe it's because I started letting him sleep by our bed at night in his to go carrier and when we wake up I take him to the kitchen to do his thing on the floor. I'm half tempted to go to HomeDepot today and buy a little piece of linoleum and stick it in the bottom of his cage. I have decided that he will start sleeping in his regular cage and hopefully that helps. He poops just fine when I am home and I try not to make a big deal about it. Let's just hope he get's over his weird pooping phase. But he's great and I love him, pretty sure he's my best friend!!! :green2:

He will be fine.
Please don't baby him too much. He's not a human child and it will do him a disservice in the long run. Instead, you pretend you are a bird! :) By treating him like a bird, he is more likely to act like one and nature will kick in. It is a healthier relationship in my opinion.

Not to say you're doing wrong! And worrying about him is normal and show you care and love him which is great. Just a friendly advice for the good health of our fids! :)

I'm going to have to admit it's really hard not to want to baby him. I baby all my animals. And they know I'm a sucker for anything they want or need. But I do know how to be firm. I just try to spoil him as much as possible.
