- RIP Hugo (African Brown Headed Parrot) 2 years old, lil Rosie May (Lovebird)
It's been my experience that most people want to get back the money they've "put into" the bird, and then some. When I was inquiring about Fred, he was $3000. She was charging so much because he was "special"...Aren't they all? He had a good vocab...for her, another reason for asking so much. She recognized that I would be a good home....She asked how much I was willing to pay, and I said not over $1500. I didn't hear back. Three months later, Fred was back on the classifieds for $1800. After meeting Fred, I paid that for him and his cage, plus a few toys.
Really, people ask what they think someone may be willing to pay. This bird is not in good condition, and may or may not become tame. Either way, he requires a lot of time and possibly money. He deserves this, but do you want to take it on for that price. You might make her an offer, based on the condition and "wildness" of the bird, and let her take your offer or not. You still have to consider that the poor little guy may never tame as you want him to be. Breeders are difficult to tame....not impossible, but difficult.
Good luck with your decision...not an easy one for sure!
Mr Fred's mom is quite right. With Hugo I paid alot of money for him from a petshop and didnt know the wiser. He cost me nearly 8 times the amount I paid him in vets bills. I will never regret it though.
Beilana - this is my advice to you!!!!!! GO and see the bird. When you are there ask her why she is charging the amount she is. The reason Im saying this is because of the following questions:
1. Is he being sold for that price because of his ability to breed?
2. Is he being sold for that price because of his gentle, tame nature?
This can be made apparant by you being around him and seeing how tame he is.
3. Is he being sold for this price because he is disease free and healthy?
This is when you stand up Beilana and tell her exactly where you stand. You state you want a vet check - her cost. Why??? He looks like he has been through hell!!!!! All the breeders in SA do blood tests if the owner requests it. You then go around to petshops in your area and ask what they charge for a baby of the breed. I have a sneaky suspicion that the price is close to his. I knw that you want to help this lil fella but remember how much vet bills can be. It isnt just the vet, its what comes with it - petrol, mopping up bloody wings etc.
Dont correspond with her over email - it can lead to confusion. Talk to her over the phone so that she has to give you immediate answers and doesnt have a chance to think up nonsense. Lol - wish I was there, I would of marched right in there and told her whats what - maybe its a good thing Im not there - lol!!!
Another good dialogue is this one: Have the other people who are interested agreed on this amount?
The breeder could lie and say yes. You then state what you want and walk out!!!!!
I nearly bought an Amazon from the same place as Hugo - he was deformed and the petshop wanted a huge price - I stated what I could give and they eventually agreed. I then marched in there and told them I was not going to touch that bird as my bird was sick. I was upset that I left the amazon behind - it broke my heart but I just couldnt have another sick bird. I dont see him at the petshop anymore and they said they didnt sell him
