Possibly Ill Conure

I am concerned for my sun conure, as it has been acting unusual and I’m pretty sure it is sick. I researched it’s recent behavior like the consistent puffiness throughout the day and discolored poop. I’m taking her to the vet anyway to check up on her, I was just wondering if you guys know anything about it? I’m new and worried about my baby ((

Additional symptoms:
Some behavior issues she didn’t have previously, like being quite bipolar. One moment she’s extremely cuddly and sweet and the next she’s trying to bite my ear and fingers off without stopping.

She’s been bobbing her head up and down the entire day, but not really in an aggressive way.

Sometimes her poop has visible seeds in it, and I thought maybe it was because i was givin her an excess amount of Millet, so I stopped. It’s currently this cream color with a yellowish film, it is quite runny. This is my main concern because I thought it would pass once I stopped giving her Millet or any other food that either isn’t supposed to be given to birds or maybe was causing the issue.

Now I understand that birds are naturally loud, but she’s been making more noise than usual. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it

And finally, she’s been slothish. She doesn’t play around much with her toys anymore.


I would appreciate any advice ( Im still new so the only thing I have to go off of until I get her to the vet is the things I find online.

Thanks for reaching out here. Know that the best help in your case will be a certified avian vet, I hope you can get your sun conure to one soon. When birds act differently it is often sign of something very wrong, so you must act quickly or his/her life may be in danger.

How old is your sun? Depending on its age, during this time (spring, summer) many member's bird go through hormonal phases when they become more aggressive, nippy and overall more nasty. This is common and passes in a couple months when fall approaches.

What is the diet your are feeding your conure? He/she should be getting fresh fruit and veggies and staying away from lots of seeds - they're not that good for our birds, basically like McDonalds for them. Consider switching her diet to something more natural and nutritious.

Yeah I'd see a vet, some of the bipolar behavior and head bobbing is just personality...but the stool would make me concerned....

For her age she is about 4 months old but I’ve only had her myself for about 2 weeks

And her diet, Her diet right now is the zupreem brand pellets, which when we got her was recommended to switch her onto. Honestly I haven’t given her a whole lot of fresh fruit, which I know I should’ve. I don’t give her a lot of seeds other than treats when trying to achieve the “step up” command. And the Millet she went through pretty quickly so at first I just thought to replace it but after research I realized I probably shouldn’t be doing that.

That's okay -- you will find there are many differing opinions on diet and what to feed our birds. When I first joined here a year and a half ago I had no idea to feed my birds fruits and veggies, they did eat pellets and seeds but since learning more I've been able to introduce all kinds of things my bird likes -- CHOP (fruits and veggies), birdie bread (basically corn bread muffin mix with veggies and tasty bid stuff thrown in), sprouts , different pellets, etc.

ah yes I see what you mean, definitely an unusual colour. Getting to a vet is exactly what I would do in that situation. Apart from that all you can do for the time being is make sure she's eating and drinking and to keep her as calm as possible

I'd be taking her to a Certified Avian Vet immediately. Birds hide their illnesses and pain instinctively as a survival technique, and usually be the time they are exhibiting the symptoms that your bird is outwardly, they are very ill.

That stool, if it has been like this more than once or twice, is indicative of a GI infection of some sort, most likely a fungal (yeast) infection. You said she's only 4 months old, so she didn't wean all that long ago, and it's quite possible she left her breeder with whatever infection it is that she had. I highly suggest Fecal cultures and Crop cultures ASAP...
