Thanks for all your prayers, it looks like they worked.
This morning I went into the macaws indoor aviary and James was caught between a twisted branch close to where the branch is hooked to the aviary wall. He had tried to squeeze through the only place, there was not enough room for him. If he had gone just a little to either side or down again, no problem, but he tried to pull himself through and he got stuck.
He was really cold and unresponsive. I got him loose and took him inside, took off my clothes and put him next to my body. I put a carbo vitalis pill on his tongue. Within a few minutes he started convulsing and his body started to tense up (if you have ever seen a bird die, you know what I'm talking about). He stopped breathing and I started to pull at his legs and press his chest and blow into his nares/mouth. It was a little rough, but I could not kill him any more- he was basically dead.
After what seemed like an eternity, his body started relaxing and I thought I'd lost him, but there came a small struggling breath. I placed him under the infrared light and made him some handrearing formula (I would normally not put any heat that close to a bird and especially not a bird with no feathers, but at this point, we were life and death). I had to get his temperature up as fast as possible. I dabbed some aloe on the bare patched of skin to make sure he did not get "sunburn".
To begin with he would only breathe once or twice a minute. After a while he started to breathe normally and I moved the infrared to a safe distance. I gave him one more carbo vitalis. He was at this point started to be responsive and his favorite thing is mixed fruit juice. I offered him some juice in a syringe and he drank it quite fast. At this point he pooped a water and urea poop, but it had no green, so he must have been stuck for quite some hours. I offered him some more formula and he ate a little.
After that he slept for a few hours, but react if a bird flew by or any other disturbance. He woke up and he sort of looked at me, as in "Give me something". I started to offer him juice, which he gulped. I didn't want to give him too much juice, so I offered him water and he was really thirsty. I then offered him some food and he started eating:
At this point he has now moved to the edge of the sofa and even though he's a bit wonky, he is "perching":
James has also now pooped as he should. It's a bit to dark, but I guess there's a lot of toxins James needs to flush from his system after being so close to death.
He's not himself yet, but I do believe he is out of the woods.
Thank you again for all your prayers- we really needed them.
