Previously slighly traumatized baby grey needs to learn step up

Yesterday you wrote you had had him for 7 hours...

Please give him time to adjust...

I am giving him time. Hes adjusting quickly and coming to me to be petted and cuddled. I'm moving at his speed mot mine. He wants to climb on me but has trouble having his feet touched and grabbing on. He comes to be petted at the front of the cage now and takes food from my hand and is moving along quickly. I do not force myself on animals, sir. He loves to actually be with people and snuggles right up and goes kiss kiss. Just uncertain about step up.

I too have a baby grey, she is learning to step up as well. I will tell you what I do. Dorothy comes to the front of the cage right away when I open the door. Sometimes I will ask her to step up and she will do it other times she is holding on for dear life! LOl What I do is give her a chance to do it then if she doesn't do it I just gently lift her toe and slide my hand or finger under and then kind of lift up. My breeder showed me this. I just want you to remember that greys are very clumsy and that this is something that they have to get comfortable with. It does take doing it over and over for many birds to learn this. Remember to reward your bird when they do get on your hand. Dorothy really doesn't have a "treat" that she likes so I just make a big fuss over her. I do this whether she does a step up on her own or I help by lifting her toes. The fact that your bird is coming to you is great, you just need to be patient and teach the step up. This could take loads of time or be learned by tomorrow, remember every bird is different! Congrats on your new baby! What is the name?

Im sorry you are right Im cutting it back. I was so used to the senegal. He wanted to be glued to my shoulder from day 1 and was always so loving and perfect but he was raised by the best parrot owner I've ever met. All her birds sit on her at the same t ime and kiss eachother and share. I don't know how she does it.

Sorry. You are right. :)

His name is oscar because the place I rescued him from was like a trash can. And he's sad and grouchy because of it.

He learned step up already. Took 6 times he is razor sharp smart. He is clumsy yes I have noticed this. Will this improve with age?

How's the stepping up going? I don't really have much personal advice on getting your baby to step up. I was fortunate that my breeder taught River to step up before I bought him at 8 weeks old. He has recently started saying "step up" back to me when I ask him to! It's in the cutest little squeaky voice. Of course as soon as the camera is pointed his way he clams right up though.

He's already got it down. He steps up. He's a genius he is.

Congratulations on your new baby!!

TY. He learned stepup within hours so he's going to be great. Has already lost 99 percent of his fear. My friend the bird breeder said to pay as much attention to him as possible and make sure he learned step up fast. He never reacted in distress, just disliked it at first.

He asks to step up on ME now. We're good buddies. Everything's going perfectly.
