Propane Fireplace

Need to know if it is safe to use a propane fireplace? We are expecting some ice accumulation and possible power outages. I haven't used the fireplace since we got our fids and just want to make sure it would be okay to use in an emergency. I wouldn't use it unless I had to, but if we lose power, there would be no other way to keep everyone warm. Thanks The fireplace is ventless meaning that there is no opening to the outside.

As long as the gas burns efficiently, and doesn't fill the room with carbon monoxide, which isn't safe for bird or human, it should be fine.

How would I know...we have used it before. Just not since we got the birds...

Carbon monoxide detector would be the only way I'd know to tell, but in a well ventilated room, if the propane powered system is rated for indoor use, and is in good repair, it should be fine.

Just like any other gas heater.

I agree with Birdman! Always important to have a carbon monixide detector, it is a gas that cannot be seen or smelt. Puts you to sleep then you pass away, no notice of the danger! There are several at my house as we have a second furnace upstairs(downstairs furnice is in the garage). Lived here 12 years and we've never had a problem luckily.

Detector all the way! We have a gas heater here and we are renting, I don't think the heater has been serviced for a long time because we had it on during the winter (the house is double brick so when it gets cold, it gets COLD..usually even colder than outside). And I got minor carbon monoxide poisoning. Just getting it minorly feels worse enough! I have a very keen sense of smell and I could smell a tiny bit of gas, but yes, you have no idea if there is carbon monoxide in the air until either you become poisoned (or someone else) or you have a detector.
