Ever since Tundra laid that shell less egg a few months ago, it's been my personal mission to educate myself as to why this happened.
I like everyone else, provide calcium in many forms to my flock.
-cuttlebone,
-leafy greens
-vegetables
-liquid calcium
-liquid vitamins
-mineral block/wheel
I was stunned to learn that without Vitamin D3 they cannot absorb it.....here I'm thinking I was providing enough for my birds.
I was really upset and it disturbed me greatly that I did that to her and I guess the rest of my birds....not intentionally of course...but none the less I wanted to rectify this issue immediately.
I just came across this article this morning and I think it explains the basic knowledge of how important calcium MUST be paired with vitamin D3.
for those of us who breed, or have pet hens that lay eggs, there is a particular paragraph worth remembering about leafy greens:22:
In the two months I have added more calcium and D3 into their diet, not only have my hens NOT laid AS MANY EGGS, they lay quicker, and easier as well.
With the warmer season coming, nothing is better for them than the sun.
I also thought it was an interesting about the UV lighting, and lack of Vit.D3
I now have this on my list of favourites.
