My question is aimed at Queensland owners in particular.
I have been wanting to buy an eclectus for quite a few months now. I have been doing heaps of research first before I take the plunge and make the commitment, and throughout my research one thing that I find, is that a license is required to own an eclectus in Queensland. This being the case, is this license required for all eclectus sub-species, or does it only apply to the Australian species (Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi)? Or vice-versa? secondly I have visited the Queensland department of Environment and heritage protection site and it is soooo confusing!! There are so many different variants of the recreational license, Which one applies to a private owner of an eclectus?

if anyone could clear this up for me it would be greatly appreciated as I am at the point of frustration on this matter?

I apologise if this subject has been covered in a previous thread before but I couldn't find anything that answered my questions.

Cheers
Daniel

If you cannot find the answer i recommend finding the inquiries email on that website and simply asking them. :)

From looking at the QLD website (which i couldn't figure out either) it looks like you need to find the 'Nature Conservation Act' they are referring to. From the looks of their license classes I think this act would list animals as 'standard', 'international', 'restricted' with anything else not listed counting as 'other international animals'. You then need to determine which list the eclectus is on (if any), and whether you have any other animals that might be on these lists, and whether you will be selling any. If you only have the one Eclectus and have no intention of selling or otherwise trading or giving it away any time soon you will probably only need the recreational license for whatever class Eclectus fall under.
AND Even if you do figure all this out you may end up having to email them regarding subspecies anyway. :P

I had a similar issue with the South Australian governments website. They have 3 lists of native species for licensing purposes 'exempt' 'basic' and 'specialist'. The Australian subspecies of Eclectus is specified on the 'basic' list and would thus need a 'basic' license if you owned any other animal on that list (because you can own ONE individual without a license... and i already have a snake on that list). [which is a ridiculously phrased rule, its not like i can breed them both! lol XD]
- except pickle ISN'T an Australian Eclectus, he is a 'red sided' New Guinea Eclectus: thus my email.

In my case they promptly emailed back and said that because i have a different subspecies of Eclectus i didn't need a license. However i am aware that in NSW they generalise all subspecies of Eclectus under the same legislation
(NSW is a lot stricter on licensing for a lot of animals TBH :P).

> I think the issue for me is that they really focused on listing natives, and i could never find anything about exotics whatsoever, but if they ever do decide that i do need a licence; i have the email to prove they told me otherwise and i shouldn't get in trouble for that down the road :)

sorry i cant really help specifically with QLD though.

i found a link to that Nature Conservation act here:
Wildlife permits and licences (Department of Environment and Heritage Protection)

but it wasn't particularly helpful. I guess the species are listed elsewhere. Sorry :(
But there are a lot of other useful links on that page. Perhaps you could try them if you got lost navigating their webpages links :P

Edit: FOUND THEM
http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/register/p01383aa.pdf

(if that link doesnt work, its linked here also in the list as "Keeping and using exotic animals under the Nature Conservation Act 1992":
http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/licences-permits/plants-animals/guidelines.html

page 2 - just 'ctrl F' to search eclectus :)
They are listed as 'international wildlife' if they aren't the aussie subspecies

lol the edits change the time stamps but i just realised that i voluntarily used over an hour of my time to sift through government crap haha! Things like this are genuinely interesting to me and I DO have a real life i swear!!! XDD

Awesome!!! You have been more than helpful and I really appreciate it. This will make it much easier to get my ducks in a row when the time comes for me to go out and finally bring one home.

Thanks again,
Cheers

from my understanding as my father breeds eckies and so did my sisters partner, in qld no matter what species of eckie u have u will require a licsence but dont quote me, just what my sister partner told me when i was begging him for one.
