Results of Lily's blood tests

Oh, I definitely see where it would be scary for a new bird owner. I was scared of Charlotte the first time I had to medicate her, and I wasn't a bird novice! Those bigger birds have scary beaks!

I well remember being a new bird owner in tears because I was trying to clip the wings and I couldn't figure out how to hold her without her either getting half loose (I was sure I would slip and cut into her actual wing) or feeling like I was crushing the life out of her. It can be terrifying! If your vet is willing to do them that's amazing. In a few years you might be comfy doing things like this yourself (God forbid the need ever arises again) or you might not. We each have our own comfort levels. I've done a lot of things on my own birds that would terrify a lot of bird owners such as cloacle swabs, flushing crops, etc. some parronts don't even do wing clippings themselves. It doesn't mean one is better or worse parrot lover, it means each of us draws the line in a different place and knows what we can and should do ourselves, and what is best left to a professional. You will get the hang of things, and hopefully you will never need to decide whether or not you want to do injections ever again!

I thought of this thread just a bit ago when I was chatting with a friend about sick birds and their care. She totally doesn't like injecting her bird, but doesn't think twice about inserting a crop tube for a tube feed, and I'm the exact opposite. I wouldn't even think about inserting a crop tube but bring on the needles no matter what size bird. SilverSage is totally correct about it's all just in the comfort level of every individual at any given time.

Our vet showed me a great toweling technigue for injections. This was for an Amazon: I took a large towel - one end kind of twisted into a rope. Catch up the parrot in the towel, with it over the head so the struggling is minimal. Then wrap the twisted end of the towel around the parrot just below the neck, and uncover the head. Sometimes these things happened all at once, it seemed. What you wind up with is a bundle of parrot. I would put him between my thighs on my lap or leave him on the bed. The lower part of the towel is loose enough to open up and examine the belly and torso at leisure. The thicker rolled part forms a barrier that the parrot can't bite over, kind of like a collar. The syringe was like an insulin syringe with a tiny needle, maybe 1/4" long at most, and the idea was to inject in the muscle either side of the keel bone, alternating sides - say left top, right top, left middle, right middle, etc. so you can avoid sticking in the same place. With the parrot wrapped like that, you don't have to use any hands to hold him, so you can part the feathers with one hand, find a good site, then inject quickly. Just put the needle all the way in and then push the plunger. I used to hold the syringe body with my left hand and actually press the needle in, then push the plunger with the right hand while steadying the syringe with the other. There was a good video I found, I'll look for it.

Here's a great video of toweling for medication or shots:

I think the forum is having some issues with PM's. I've sent you a PM with my phone number. Text or call me. I can come to you and we can get something figured out to help you through this.

not cheap but if you even have a regular mobile vet in your
area i bet they could do a basic injection in your home for a price.
sure could be a way to start to make up with her.

i have used mobile vets when ever i could
through life. makes that part of life pretty stress free
for em. treated all my dogs the same.

I've looked in my sent items folder and it looks like you might not be getting any of my responses to you.

Scott (or other mod), can you forward her my email address?

Absolutely! She has the requisite post count to PM, but I'd be happy to forward.

She finally did get the message, but they're still not showing up in my sent items folder. I just sent you a reply to a message, Scott, so let me know if you don't get it.
